I have a '69 Mercury Montego MX. It's turquoise with a white painted top. I don't think it's original paint. Anyways, on the side pillars, there are these medallions that have a picture of a skier and the words "SKI PAK SPECIAL". What the heck does this mean? Is this something to do with the paint job or what? Am I supposed to be able to fit skis in the car? Even stranger, the car is originally a Kansas car. They don't ski much there, do they? Help solve the mystery...

This ill be a long shot but go to www.highcountryspecial.com and see if there's an e-mail click..

There were several "Ski Packages" offered through the years..as you said not many fron the Kan.DSO but the Denver DSO had many from 1963-late 70's may Jon will have some info.

sam

PS..I had a '67 "Bac'aruda" in '68 sweet little 273Hipo in it...well until I blew the engine

haha Ski Pak.....hmm kinda sounds like the VW Golf package that theyve been givin the past few years with the K2 Snowboard or Rossignol Skis option (nice quality stuff too!!)
My take on it is that you maybe got a special paint option or something with the car, maybe a lil different interior (?) and haha lastly A PAIR OF SKIS!
haha hope it helps have a good one

Well, I haven't heard of a Ski "Pak" Special, but there was a "Ski Country Special" offered in the late 60's. Sources are a little iffy on the exact years. The only proof I've seen shows 1967 model cars.

The Ski Country Special was basically a paint package, but also included a few things like a limited slip dif, ski rack, snow tires and special badges. The package was offered in Colorado so the special colors were named after Colorado ski resorts; Aspen Red, Vail Blue, Winter Park Turquoise, Loveland Green and Breckenridge Yellow.

The '67 SKS package was offered on Fairlane and Galaxie hardtops, Mustang hardtops and fastbacks and on the Country Sedan. No mention of Montegos.

The "proof" of this special I've seen is a newspaper ad that Mark Hartman dug up and had linked on his High Country Special page for quite a while. Mark has some great info on the specials, but he recently lost his server space, so he and I are in the midst of posting his info on my site. You can see a copy of the ad here:
http://californiaspecial.com/images/skics.gif

Although it doesn't mention Montegos in the ad it's entirely possible that Ford kept this promotion going through '69. Any chance of getting a photo of this emblem? I'm sure Sam or I would be happy to put it up on either one of our sites. I can also scan it in for you if you don't have access to a scanner.

Cool find! I always love hearing about new ones!

Huh, so it's starting to sound like an actual thing. I thought maybe it was some weird ski lodge club emblem that someone stuck on there. Also, I made a mistake - it's SKI PAC with a C, not PAK.

I have a digital camera at home so I'll snap a photo and then if I figure out how to upload it I'll post it here.

Thanks for your help so far!

On a side note to this thread, here's a photo of the "Ski Country Special" badge for 1967 as discussed in my previous post.

Mark Hartman, who owns the other High Country Special web site is loosing his server space and has graciously agreed to post his great ads and photos on my site. You can take a look here.
