Ok, the owners of the '69 Falcon sedan still aren't ready to part with it, so in the mean time, a member of another Ford board let me know of a '63 Falcon station wagon for sale at a body shop down in Texas. It's a six cylinder, manual transmission. Red with a roof rack. From the pictures of the car I've received (he was pretty thorough in covering all angles of the car), there isn't any rust.

Mechanically, the exhaust manifold leaks (which isn't a big deal, since reproduction six cylinder engine manifolds are available if worse came to worse). The engine otherwise runs fine. The passenger side tail light is broken, there are a few minor tears in the seat upholstery, and the spare tire cover is missing. The car has a solid undercarraige, no holes,or major rust. The spare tire carrier is solid except it looks like it banged into something. Small dent and a part of the seam pulled away. Headliner is gone, bows still there.

It sounds like a #4 car, which the latest price guide I have says should go for about $1,300. Coincidentally (or not), that also happens to be the seller's asking price. I haven't talked to the owner yet, but I may be able to talk him dow a couple hundered.

Does sound like a reasonable candidate for restoration? How hard to find would be things like the tail lights or the spare tire cover? It looks like the location in North Texas should be arid enough to assure minimal rust, but purchasing a car long distance is still a scary prospect.

Thanks,
Joe

Sounds cool Joe, I think the taillights are the same for the coupes & sedans. I always liked the wagons. I'd go for it (with a V8 swap in mind).

Thanks. I'll probably drive it for a while as a six cylinder. Out of curiousity, do you know when Ford started using hydraulic lifters? I believe they started using them in the mid sixties (my '67 Mustang has them), but I don't know when they first came into use.

Thanks,
Joe

Joe, I think it was 64 or 65 that they switched. my 66stang has a 200 6 and it is hydraulic. Also it sounds like a excellent price! and wagons are always cool!!
I dont no about the V8 swap though.......

I knew it had to be at least by '64, since my Mustang shop manuals indicate that all egines (except certain models, I believe the 428 was one) across all model years of Mustangs had hydraulic lifters. I was hoping I'd get lucky and the '63 would have hydraulic lifters also.

I agree, wagons, especially the early 60s Falcon wagons, are pretty cool. I've considered getting a wagon for a while, and I figured why not do it with some style? I don't know if my budget (time or money) will allow for the restoration just yet, and I still need to call the guy and talk to him directly, so we'll see.

Thanks,
Joe

It looks like I may need to put any plans on hold for a little bit. My grandmother fell and broke her hip (the second time she fell and broke a hip since June). I need to attend to some family stuff first, so it looks like my Falcon wings have been temporarily "clipped."
