Went to the track Saturday. Somebody was racing a Mustang Cobra. On the side was a decal, 302GL "Cobra". Is that not the same engine as the GT??? Did this guy have a GT with a Cobra sticker?? O.K., suppose it is the same, what's the difference then????? Is it the package???? What???? Just wondering.....

What was the body style, Ked?

I'm not sure, but I think the Fox Body Canadian Cobra's (pre '93) had something like that affixed to them.

I bet Ian would know.

I remember a Canadian Mustanger telling me one time that some Mustang GT's were sold in Canada badged as Cobra's. Or something like that. I can't remember what was so special about them, but I'm pretty sure other than the "special" badging, they were ordinary GT's.

Heck, it might have even been Ian that told me this!

Cobras of that era have rounded fog lights don't they? That's the way I pick them out, apart from the Cobra badging.

All of the things that distinguish a COBRA from a GT that can be seen from the outside, can be bought and installed. So it is very possible and quite frequent to see a GT, with a Cobra hood(the two big holes on top), the cobra front facia(round foglights), the cobra emblems, and either the SVT badge or COBRA rear facia(says COBRA instead of MUSTANG GT).

So, was the car a real COBRA? Look under the hood and see if it has a big ole snake on the intake...still might be aftermarket. Take a look at the guages...are they white? Still might be aftermarket...how about the brakes? Do the calipers say COBRA? Still might be aftermarket. HMMMMM...so how far do you have to dig to find out if its a real COBRA? Anyone know a sure-fire check without doing a VIN check?

As for the 302GL badge, never seen one. Surely isn't a stock badge, so that makes me very suspicious of the whole package. Although, I have thought about swapping my GT MUSTANG badges for 5.0's. Or removing them completely...

Mike,
even a VIN check won't ID a Cobra..they were Gt's pulled from the Assembly Line...
The best way to check a Cobra out is to have the SVT paper work with the producton number and VIN on it to Compare with the VIN on the Mustang.

Also later (97?) the valve covers have a sticker signed by the engine builder.

Cobras also got a different tire inflation decal in the glovebox which says Cobra on it..this even isn't enought..why?

Jasons 95 Coupe has one...also a SVT logo on trunk..and a V6

Mike

And to muddy the waters even more, some of the early Cobra's had Mustang GT on the rear bumper cover too. Not all of the Cobra's said Cobra on the back!

Well, they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!
