This weekend, Mike and I were talking about the resonance Mike's exhaust was giving him at around 2000 rpms, and I mentioned a bow-tie friend of mine just solved the same problem on his IROC by installing an insert.

Well, Mike, as promised, here's the info...

What my friend used was a disc insert made by Car Chemistry Inc., and sold by Summit. I had thought it was a spiral silencer, but I was wrong. They actually use two or three discs with offset holes to quiet the sound.

My friend used part # CC1-3D103R, which is for a 3" inside diameter pipe. That part number is a 3 disc unit, and the price is $54.99 each. The manufacturer says it does not hurt horsepower, and my friend said he didn't feel a horsepower loss.

This item is designed to be slipped inside header collectors, or inside exhaust pipes downstream of the catalytic converter[s].

I checked Summit on-line and they show the manufacturer, but the search engine didn't recognize the part number. It is in the Summit catalog, though.

Steve, does it affect ONLY the 2K rpm drone? Or does it affect the throaty growl of the exhaust too?

How about at WOT?

It quiets the exhaust at all rpms. My buddy's IROC still sounds nice and has a nice growl with it, though.

Thanks Steve! You are truly a man of your word.

As Steve found out first hand, my MAC cat-back exhaust sounds great, except at 2000rpm where it will resonate rather loudly.

I'll look into these and let you know if I go that route. Who knows, if adding the labor makes it end up being in the same price range, I might just throw some 3.73 or 4.10 gears in and keep the RPMs up over 2K. Hmmmm...decisions decisions...

Thanks for the info Steve. While the 2K drone that is produced by my cat-back Flowmasters doesn't bother me too much, my curiosity was piqued when I thought there might be a way to "tone" it down without affecting the rest of the growl.

Mike, that's one method....or just pump up the volume!

Pumping up the volume is my current resolution. Doesn't work when I have riders though...tender ears and all that ya know.

Funny how when I'm riding alone I don't notice it as much. Wonder why that is? Just cause the family knows I'm home before I even turn down our street... Huh, did you say something?
