Just noticed a little bit of wear near one of the whatchamadingy's on the convertible top. The whatchamadingy being the joint where the top folds when it's down. Wondering if there is something I can use to redye it black???? Maybe something around the house here????? What is the best product to care for the top???? I bought some stuff, hold on, I'll see what it is......it's Blue Magis Convertible Top Cleaner, says it "cleans, brighten's and protects". Ummmm, should I use something else on it other than regular washing??? Like an armourall type product?????

I want advise on the leather seats, also. Bought some "tanner's preserve" cleaner. Turned out it was basically liquid saddle soap. Used it, guess the results were o.k. Got some Duragloss Leather Conditioner today, to use AFTER cleaning the leather. Am hoping to have time to apply some of that later (yeah, if I'd get off line!!!).

O.K., that's all. Just curious how everyone else cares for their 'vert.

I picked up some convertible top cleaner at the auto store and it is basically a mild soap. Rinses clean. Doesn't get ALL the dirt off the white top though. I guess the only way to keep a white top white is to keep putting new ones on.

I haven't done anything on the leather seats other than wipe them down with a damp cloth.

I've been told by a number of detailers NEVER to use armour-all or similar products on the top, when I asked how to best care for the top on my '00. They say these products look great but they attract dirt into the top material that builds up and gets very hard to remove over time. They say it can also lead to premature top replacement.

All said to only use a soft bristle brush with a mild car wash solution (that doesn't contain any wax products) to wash it and to towel-dry it with a clean, soft towel. Also told me not to put the top down again until it's completely dry. They finally said that if possible try to wash and dry the top in the shade. Hope this helps!

Thanks Joe.
Good bits of info there.

It's hard to keep my top clean, cause it spends most of its time in the down position.

and when you have the top down..be sure to put the boot on..dust and dirt will get into the hinge and lower areas.

Ford Parts Dept has a really neat looking cover which covers the entire back seat area reducing sun fade to the rear seating area..

Thanks, Joe. The only thing I have used is the cleaner that I bought. Have avoided any polishes/waxes, etc. stuff.

Sam,
The boot is still new and NEVER been used. Still in the original package!!!

I am guilty of putting the top down in the morning on the way to work when it may be damp from the dew. Soooo, your saying I should'nt do that???? Geez, just ruin my a.m. fun!!!

Do I have to go to FORD to get a boot? Any other places I can order a white one?

(Kicking myself in the butt. I had a boot on the 71 and somehow didn't think to get one for the 94...DUH!!!

Ked - Never thought about the top down in the AM thing. I must admit that I do the same thing, but I put the top up when I get to work.

I was told that if the top is put down wet, say like after a storm, and is not allowed to dry out, that mildew can develop on the top and moisture will accumulate in the top's storage area, with the same risk there (smell, mildew, rust, etc.). Again they said it will lead to a premature death of the top and might put the top motor and mechanism at risk for problems if this practice went on for a long time.

As for the boot - I got one with my '00 but its a flimsy thing that can be a real pain to put on, therefore I only use it when I go on longer top-down rides. I wish they had a hard cover like my co-worker's BMW does, as it's alot less of a hassle to deal with.

Is anyone aware of any options other than the flimsy thing that comes with the car?

sam

Ok..now this one can be bought from Ford Parts Dept..in 95 I paid $125 for it..notice it goes down under the truklid..Ford designed it with snaps that line up with the screws for the trim...it also "tucks" under the trim around the bottom of the roofline (vert top) and "tucks" under the bottom of the front of the rear seats..covers from "rear" of trunk to front of back seats...

One word of caution..becareful of belt buckles..I scratched both side leaning over the body to tuck the tabs under the rear seats...

Oh, and there's a running pony in the center of the rear seat on the cover too
