I finally got around to checking the timing on my 1990 convertible today after owning it for just over 2 years. One of my manuals gives instruction to not even check the timing unless the distributor has been disturbed, so I have just assumed that all was fine. After hearing about a fair number of 5.0's with factory set timing at around 6 to 8 degrees instead of the standard 10, I thought it was time to see exactly where mine was. It turns out that mine was set at 8. How many of you have found that your factory timing was other than 10 degrees, and if so, what was it set at? I didn't power tune mine, as I want to keep it conservative, but bumping it up to the proper 10 degrees has certainly woken up the engine... ------------------ Steve - M&M Member #690 '90 Limited Edition Mustang LX 5.0 Convertible '67 Mustang Coupe Member: Vancouver Island Mustangs Association; 1990 Limited Edition Mustang Registry Steve's 1990 Limited Edition Convertible Website

Thanks, Stewart. I'm wondering how many of the 5.0 cars are set low at the factory. That is the reason for my post - just curious. ------------------ Steve - M&M Member #690 '90 Limited Edition Mustang LX 5.0 Convertible '67 Mustang Coupe Member: Vancouver Island Mustangs Association; 1990 Limited Edition Mustang Registry Steve's 1990 Limited Edition Convertible Website

I've wondered about that ever since Dave posted what his timing was set at, and I am even more curious now that you have posted your timing!I need to buy a timing light so I can see what mine is set at. Any suggestions on a good, relatively inexpensive light? Stewart

I picked up an Equus Dual Beam Xenon light a few years ago. It has a metal casing and seems to be of very good quality.------------------ Steve - M&M Member #690 '90 Limited Edition Mustang LX 5.0 Convertible '67 Mustang Coupe Member: Vancouver Island Mustangs Association; 1990 Limited Edition Mustang Registry Steve's 1990 Limited Edition Convertible Website

As I stated in our last thread on timing, my 89 GT was set at 7* from the factory and I bumped it up to 14*... what a difference! The car had way more snap, and felt much more eager to rev. I have the timing on my 79 set at 12* right now.Almost every 5.0 that I have seen has had the timing set below the stated factory setting of 9*. I don't know what they use to set the timing at the factory, but it sure errors on the conservative side. For the 5 minutes it takes to do it certainly is worth it. ------------------ Cheers, Ian M&M Member #395 ------------------- '79 Mustang Indy 500 Pace Car Ian's Pace Car Website Vancouver Island Mustang Association Website Indy Pace Car Registry of Mustangs Official Website "If you get to thinking you are someone of some importance and influence, just try ordering another persons dog around." - Author Unknown
