Yesterday, after 2 1/2 years of ownership, I finally got around to advancing my timing. I didn't want to get too radical, so I bumped it from 4* to 10*. I now have a little bit of a burble on decelleration. It didn't do this before. Why? Can I make it go away?

"Ba-dop-dop-dop-dop" Sort of a series of little backfires. Nothing major. It's not as bad as Ian's with an off-road pipe, but still annoying.

Never mind. I had it out on the highway for the first time this morning and it "pings" now on 92 octane. It's coming back down when I get home.

Yours was set at 4*??? Wow, that's low, even considering the varience that they have from the factory. They are supposed to be set at 9* on the assembly line, though mine was down at about 7* in my 89 GT. I advanced mine to 14* and had no pinging at all with 93 octane. I have my 79 set at 12* right now with no problems. Maybe the outer portion of your balancer has shifted a bit? Sounds very strange that it would ping at only 10*.Hey, I like my burble on decel!! ------------------ Cheers, Ian M&M Member #395 ------------------- '79 Mustang Indy 500 Pace Car Ian's Pace Car Website Indy Pace Car Registry of Mustangs Official Website "If you get to thinking you are someone of some importance and influence, just try ordering another persons dog around." - Author Unknown

I dropped it back 2 notches. No more "burble". No more ping. Life is once again good.

I just had my GT smogged. Got the results back and noticed that they show the timing degree on the printout! I never noticed that before. Mine is set at 10 degrees BTDC, and I have never had any problems with burbleing or pinging, and I run 87 octane regular through mine! I'm happy!! Stewart
