Im planning to ditch my Smog pump on my 90 GT, It looks to be an easy job, but I was wondering if any of you have dont this already, and if so, what size/length surpentine belt did you switch over to? This would be a big help to me, if I had this info before I make a pain of myself at the parts store, test fitting them, till I get the correct size, THX in advance.

Mike, when I get home tonight, I'll check a couple different tech manuals I have and see what they say. I also referred this question to a higher authority. Hopefully between my books and his knowledge, we'll have the answer for you.

That is, unless someone beats me to it!

Stewart,
Thax for any help you can offer. I did find this helpful info at this site below, but its only for a car equiped with underdrive pulleys, but it should be a good starting point for me.

Mike, this is funny...my buddy, the one I go to when I ask for help (other than on here), his name is Mike too!

Anyway, he said he just did what you're asking about. Here's what he said, "...The question is kinda easy, since I just did it (myself). Now....if I could only remember what length! LOL! I think it was 74" long, and all I did was bypass the pump by routing the belt the usual way, and skipping the smog pump."

He said he would get the numbers from the belt for me after he got home from college, but I didn't have an email from him when I checked tonight.

I'll send him a reminder and ask him for those numbers.

BTW, he has a 1989 AOD 5.0, so it should be exactly the same as yours.

Here is the easiest way to eliminate the smog pump. Trial and error on the smaller belt, or get the kit to replace the pump from Ford MOtorsport. Its basically a pulley on a bracket. Pretty simple.

Mike,

My buddy finally came thru. The belt part number he has on his car is 5060760.

Be aware tho that he is using underdrive pullies, so if you aren't, you might want to go a half size larger, or maybe even a full size larger.

Stewart,
I have only had this car for about 6 weeks, and just finished doing the valve job, replaced the waterpump & timing chain, plus added a 3 core Rad, and its running really good now, so I am going to hold off on any mods for the momment, and just have fun driving it !! Ive only put 55 miles on it since I bought it.
