In all reality, any 5.0 HO from 86-93 is a great, and powerfull stock engine. Some people doubt the 86 because of the first year of fuel injection, and the smaller intake, heads, throttle body and camshaft, but they are pretty close to equal. Either way you go, it will be better than the V-6!!!! Remembering all the parts in the world are made available to 5 liter, so you can build it any way you would like to.

Unless you get lucky any 302 from the 80's will have miles on it. One from the 90's should have less. If you don't want to rebuild it first get the newest lowest milage you can find. IF you plan to use a supercharger try for a 92 or older as they have forged pistons stock.

Keep in mind to be "legal" on the federal level(emissions) you must use same year or newer...possible same on your State laws...

In going with Sams theory of Laws, a 94 or 5 mustang GT is where you should steal a motor and trans and wiring harness out of. I also agree, that a newer motor might have less miles on it, but if you are going through it, It kinda dont really matter. Its about what you can find, and afford.

JimB, I believe Forged pistons were used all the way through 95.

Actaully Tony, FYI the last year for the forged pistons was 1992. In 1993 Ford switched over to a cast hyperutectic (high silicon content) piston in the Mustang H.O. 5.0 engines. This was supposedly done to reduce oil consumption in the engines (tighter tolerances were possible with the cast units), and to reduce costs. It has also been speculated that Ford had an over supply of short blocks originally intended for the V-8 T-birds (which had the hyperutectic pistons) and decided that the most cost effective move was to use them up in the Mustangs. I haven't seen any official documentation to back this up, however.

You should have no problems with a 93 to 95 5.0 H.O engine unless you plan on running a larger shot of nitrous (150 hp+), or adding a supercharger or turbo system over 8# of boost. The hyperutectic pistons can't handle the increased stress of these situations like the forged aluminum units could. For an street engine they are fine however (they can handle lower levels of boost without too much worry).

Thanks for the Info Ian, and wecome to the board! I knew about those pistons, but I thought they only used them in non HO applications. We did a motor in a 94 mustang gt at the dealership I was at in 97. Local gearhead done blowed it up!!!! When we took it apart, it had alum forged pistons. If memory serves me correctly, the hyper pistons are also coated. This was Fords fix to stop the oil burning problem that was so created by early engineers. Why I have no idea but I do remember that the later model 302 was designed to burn 1 qt to 1 1/2 qts in a 3000-3500 mile period.

Don't doubt the 86, I picked up some mustang monthly's for 86 and one of the has a shootout between the mustang gt, lx, and camaro IROC-Z(lt-1). And the mustangs were both faster with the lx being in the hi 14's both nearly a half to full second faster the the chevy.
