I was sitting here and got to thinking about a car that got away from me that I should have snapped up when I first spotted it.

1967 Shelby GT 500 clone with all original Shelby exterior/interior parts, 69 428 SCJ (all done), 4-speed toploader. Originally a 390 GT car. Needed upholstery, paint (bodywork was done), detailing and an alignment job. Asking price was $9,800Cdn obo (this was in 1998).

I was too timid finacially at the time to grab it myself so I told a good friend about it and he took it home for $9,500. Another $5,000 (again, Cdn$) later and he had a near perfect GT 500 clone. He drove it for about 6 months and then took it down to Washington and sold it for a nice hefty profit. I should have bought the car myself and done it up. I guarentee that it would still be in my possesion. Every time I think about it I kick myself.

So, how about some stories from you guys/gals about the one that got away!!

In '78 or so, I had a chance to buy a white '69 Boss 429 with no oil pressure for $1000. I've been kicking myself ever since...

I also passed up a nice '63 Galaxie with a big block {406?} for $500.

There have been many.

had the original bullet car when I was 17. Always liked mustangs , but , did not know what I had at the time. Also had a cobra 2 and a king cobra. sold them all cheap . Sure wish I had them now.At least now I can begin again to look for those cars and try and get them back, yes Ian that is part of the reason Cathy and I are always asking the VIMA members to keep their eyes open for cars for us , but , Cathy also has her heart set on a 65 convert, 91 5.0 convert and a 69 mach 1. Now you know why I am going bald , it,s because I,m pulling it out .

Most of you have heard this one, but its left a lasting image I'll never forget

In 1972, I traded my Bright Yellow 1970 Boss 302 for my first wife, should have kept the car.

Back in 1990 or 91 I worked for a tire store in Fl & some of our customers belonged to the central Fl Mustang club. One day one of the members comes in to buy tires for a car he just finished restoring & knows I love Mustangs & tells me one has to go because he has to many project cars going on at once. He offers me a 69 Mach 1, 428cj & 4spd for $1,000.00. Only catch was the car was hit in the rear, but that price included all the sheet metal to repair it. I am still kicking myself for that one. I also looked at a 70 Cougar 351c & a 4spd. this was about 25 years ago & when we went to look at & road test the car it had a dead battery & at the time not knowing about electrical work in cars I got scared that something major was wrong & just let it go.Man that was stupid, it was probably just a bad battery.

Mine was a '68 GT500KR. I was 17 and in high school though some jerk customized a 'stang. The owner also owned an alighnment shop. I think he wanted $3000 (1978) it was White and looked like new .....
also saw a Sprint 'Vert but couldn't conect with the owner.

I've never sold anything I'd regret

But my dad always regrets:

1. selling his 1970 Boss 302 - for a boat

2. Not buying (or even calling about) this car-

We were in Dayton, OH for thanksgiving, around 1990. Ad says- 1968 Mustang fastback. Rolling chassis with 427 SOHC engine. project car never completed. runs. $5000.

Hey, Ian... remember the orange 68 Cougar in Nanaimo?

We were on our way to Port Alberni for a mountain biking trip and saw this car at a lot on the side of the highway. The place was closed so I called the next day. They were asking $6800 for it. Didn't get the details and never went back to check it out in more detail but that car sure was sweet in orange! Very straight too... sigh. I keep telling myself that it was grungy under the hood and full of bondo. Probably wasn't but at least then I don't feel so bad.

Yep! Looked like it had Eliminator stripes on it too. I still wonder about that car now and then myself.

Was that the trip where I hit the tree while we were riding?? Oh, I need to be more specific? Ok, the time that I ended up holding that tree in a death grip while hanging over the ledge?? Maybe the blow to the head was why we didn't stop on the way back.

The one that got away... My Husbands 88GT Hatchback. The one he bought to lure me into marring him then he sells it! Well he sold it before we got married ( to buy his truck back). But I sure took the bait! It took me three years to find another one to take it's place. My 89 Smurf.

Sad thing is two years ago I seen that ol 88GT on the back of a wrecker with the front end totally smashed off. Funny thing was my brother in law's body shop fixed it. this was the second time the car had been totaled. for some reason the hatch door was damaged but had a perfectly good rear window with defrost in it. That piece of that car now resides in my 89 which wasn't originally equipped with defrost. (It only took a sw and relay and two wires that plug into the harness to make it work, all of the rest of the wiring was already there!)

I sold my first stang, I bought it new, a 1978 Cobra, white with red stripes and interior, 302, auto, every option available.
It was 1981, it had 38,000 miles and was paid off, sold it for $3900. Boy was I dumb.

The ones that got away? 69 Cougar Eliminator, blue with leather int. and 428 auto, buddy in high school had it, I told him I wanted it, he sold it to some one else for $1200, I still remind him of that to this day. (26 years)

1965 mustang coupe, Hi-Po car with ralley pack and Cragar wheels from the late sixties, I passed it up, the high price scared me off. $1000 (picture me banging my head against wall)

I worked with a guy for about 6 years and he owned a 87 Saleen, I always told him that if he was going to sell it to give me the 1st shot at it. I transfered buildings and the next time I saw him he was driving a Tahoe. He traded in the Saleen for that POS. Man was I PO.

Cars that I thought about for too long & got "scooped" on: 68 1/2 "R" code 428CJ Mustang GT coupe
I came across a basically mint 69 Talladega at the Portland Oregon Swap Meet in 86,nothing missing, but the engine was using oil.All the smog equipment & oil cooler hardware intact. Guy was asking $7800. but all I could think was "if I get in a accident, where would I ever find front fenders & bumper?" Too paranoid
Too many Boss 302 & 428 CJ Mach 1`s to mention, (althogh I certainly enjoyed the 5 "R" code cars I DID buy!)

Oh well, I'd have to say my last Mustang- cute little fire engine red 'coupe. I was freshly divorced at the time and didnt have the funds to keep up it. There were the beginnings of some major body work problems and I sold it cheap.

Six months later I met and married a guy who I stood and watched restore a couple of Mustangs from the bottom up MINT and just kept kicking myself for not holding on to that car

1979. An airline pilot was liquidating all toys re divorce. Bought a 60 Vette for 3500, and it was nice. Next to it: a 66 blue Shelby with a rf wreck. Needed fender, apron and susp. 38,000 miles, cover in the back with spare tire. No rust, original. He got drunk in the keys and hit a boat and trailer. $1500! I knew about Shelbys but was into Vettes at the time. A week later, I REALLY knew about Shelbys!! I was sick!!

Fast forward to 92. A 68 GT 350 Shelby basket case for 1750! I bought that one!!

In 1985 (when Sherra and I were basically broke) a neighbor was selling his girlfiend's '71 MAch 1 for $700 in excellent condition.
That and the fully loaded '69 Mach 1 black beauty I had to give up in '78 in a divorce.

Way back in '93 (lol ) I happened upon an original owner '68 GT/CS for sale. It was pratically all original including the paint (drivers seat was slightly worn), the person was asking $2000. Just sucks that I was 14 and couldnt convince my parents to buy it (paper route money didnt add up to that much ) . I wish I could travel back in time...

It was a 66 Mustang coupe, 4v 289, 4 speed. It had a lot of miles but was from Arizona so it had no rust on it anywhere. (still had the factory paint, but it was faded)

It had a spun bearing in the motor. The woman who owned it only wanted $1200 for the car.

I decided I didnt want another "project" car (when all this one needed was a little motor work)so I didnt buy it.

There's been a few others, but that was the worst one.

I've got concert t-shirts older than he is.

One that got away: 72 Sprint Fast back. Left for dead on the side of the road.(No motor or trans.) I still lived at home, and Dad said it wasn't worth the paperwork.

'70 Mercury Cyclone; dark ivy green, black vinyl interior, 351C-4V 4-speed, old Americans.... beautiful (even in dark ivy green).... $1000 (in 1978)

My Dad found it, told me about it and got me excited about it, drove it then wouldn't let me buy it because he decided it would kill me (faster'n dollar massage, I'm told)
