Is a gift certificate or cash a bad Christmas gift? We were arguing that last night. My Dad said he hated the fact that his Dad would give him $50 for Christmas. And maybe I made a mistake by telling him I would love that for Christmas so I could buy the car part that I wanted.

This year I have told everyone in my family to buy something for the less fortunate instead of something for me.

The reason I ask is a gift certificate bad? Is because that's what I was thinking of giving to family members. But what my Dad says makes me wonder if it's a good idea or not?

All kidding aside, I think just giving $$ to someone, especially a close family member at Christmas, in stead of a present is a copout... It kind of puts a price on your relationship/friendship...

I always got an empty feeling when my dad would send a card and a couple of $$, I would rather have just gotten a card with a sincere message...

But, if someone needs something from there favorite store "SUMMIT" and that is what they need... I see nothing wrong with a gift certificate...

Parts cost toooooo much to be purchasing the wrong ones... And everyone has preferences and different tastes...

But, I would trust any of the M&M members tastes if they want to buy someting for my '66...

Summit racing gift cards are every where at Xmas, around my family.
Don,good point about cash,a gift card is better then cash.It shows that they care enough to go to the store to get it.My poor friends and family have learned the hard way not to buy me parts.
My taste is really different

Don,I got an idea, you go and buy something for your car from me, and I'll buy soemthing for my car from you. That way I tell my wife that you wanted me to buy it from you.
Think it will work,ok so its really slow at work today.

Don, you sound just like my Dad!!

He also complains the store that he spends thousands of dollars at every year (buying paint he's a general contractor) sends him a card and a box of Chocolates. He said he would rather have just a card with a nice message and leave out the chocolates. Okay. I don't understand.

But I do see your point in it puts a price value on your relationship with your family. maybe I'm just getting lazy. They have everything, and I don't know what to get them.

How about taking them on a trip with you.Or make them something,or do some work for them or with them. For my pops it's the fact I show up when ever he needs me he loves that. He's got all they toys and really dose not need anything. But he stil likes the thought that you went out and found him something,or a gift card from Summit always works.

I used to go home whenever I was sumoned to help my dad do whatever. When I used to do christmass, I always bought him tools. Thats what he wanted. He said they were an investment in our future. Because when he was gone theyd be past on to me. So now I have the tools. (I'd rather have Dad.)

2nd..what went 2nd?..I forgot....I use to know..

As for money and gift certificate,I see nothing wrong with them at all..Mom would rather take the money and go shopping then bore me with all the small details of the shopping trip...LOL....

As for myself..nothing PLEASE...I'm at the stage in life if I want I have it or I can get it myself.

Now fun little humor gifts I love...I thought more of the "portable mobile john" gag gift than all I got last year..everyone knows I can't go 100 mile without stopping at a rest area

And another thing......

MoM makes these gifts we "kids" call the Box.
It is a little of everything wrapped and put into a box with your name on it.

you name it..Soap..gag gifts..model cars,old match box car..anything..whatever..

heck with the fancy wrapped stuff we rush to get to "the Box".

How about buying an actual gift or two AND do the gift certificate/gift card/cash thing? That way you are actually picking out a gift as well as contributing to something the recipient really wants.

Don,
In my early days in the Navy, it was always easier for me to send cash for Christmas to my parents and sister. Of course the cash went with a very nice card and personal note from me to them.
Now, dad gets a new NPD catalog telling him to circle all the parts he needs for his '66. Works for Christmas, B-day, and fathers day. Also keeps mom happy. Gift certificates also work nicely.

Here's the story...

My parents split up when I was in the 3rd grade... And so did our family of 5 kids...
I never got to see my dad much after that...

When I was eleven,,, He bought & sent me one of the best baseball gloves you could get at the time... And baseball was my passion... I'm 52 now and I still remember it as if it were yesterday...

On my 18th birthday, he sent me a card with $2 in it,,, and I can remember that like it was yesterday... he wasn't broke...

Can you see the difference...

By the way my dad is 86 and he is alive and well and I am going to see him at Christmas... We are going to rebuild his kitchen for him...
