*ahem*The Montgomery County community of Kensington has banned the jolly old man from its annual tree lighting ceremony this Sunday. "Because two families in our town felt that they would be uncomfortable with Santa Claus being a part of our event," Mayor Lynn Raufaste said. The Town Council banned Santa after the complaints. In years past, Santa would arrive on a fire truck and light the tree with the mayor. But on Sunday, the mayor will do the honors herself. "This is a part of the American life, and I just think it's a shame that we can't have one in our town this year," Raufaste said. Montgomery County lawmakers recently passed legislation that would have regulated smoking in the privacy of people's homes. The county reversed course this week after a rash of worldwide attention and a public opinion backlash. "At least now Santa can stay at home and smoke, if nothing else, since he is now banned from the tree lighting," mocked one Montgomery County lawmaker on Wednesday. "We have become a national embarrassment." /news story Gotta love our country.... ------------------ MarcusBR> Beating the competition is where the thrill is and that pride you get. That's national already? DAMN! Kengsington isn't far from my house at all. I heard that on the radio yesterday morning, and it really pissed me off. I don't get it. How can you celebrate christmas, AND be offended by santa? The most likely reason for this is that those familys DON'T celebrate christmas, so.......if you don't celebrate it, you won't be there right? If your not there, why in the hell should you care if santa is there? aaaaaarrrrrrrrrrgggggggg.... that pisses me off. I hate people who feel it is there job to ruin this time of year for everyone else. If we are all about respecting other peoples beliefs, then respect mine....and LEAVE THEM ALONE! *gets off soap box*. Sorry guys, but since this whole thing isn't far from where I live it really makes me angry...why can't people just pull the sticks out of there A$$'s just for a few weeks every year?------------------ -FISHTAIL 92GT "The Ghetto Sled" CMPS major @ University of MD college park Best ET/MPH thus far: 14.40/100.67mph....damn wheel spin. I blame it all on mental constipation. People need something to do so they don't take up stupid causes such as this. When you're busy wire wheeling a 32 year old car frame, you don't have time to march at the 'Ban St. Nick' or 'Ban Harry Potter' rallies. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 M code 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 open '72 Mustang Sprint Coupe 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Lok '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip '97 Probe GTS 2.5L DOHC My Photo Page Christmas shopping? SCOOP, these people have way too much tme on there hands, like Steve said if you are working on a 32 year old car you dont have a whole lot of extra time for crap like they are spewing. that s**t makes me mad. We need to find out what holiday they celebrate & complain about that. Get even with them, or you could dress up as Santa & show up anyway. from the book, Saints Preserve Us! by: Sean Kelly & Rosemary Rogers: "Saint Nicholas is the patron saint of: bakers, barrel makers, bootblacks, brewers, brides, chaildren, dockworkers, fishermen, creece, merchants, pawnbrokers, perfumers, prisoners, russia, sailor, spinsters and travelers. ....we know him by his dutch name, Santa Claus. He was bishop of Myra, Turkey. Three young women were about to enter prostitution, for their father had no money for dowry. In secret in the middle of the night, Nicolas threw three bags of gold into their window (the "three balls" reprsenting financial aid in a time of need, became the emblem of the pawnbroker's guild). In famine, he provided "miraculous" bread, hence the patronage of bakers. During the same famine, he was served meat by a butcher, much to his surprise. Suspecting the worst he inspected the butcher's cellar, to find three barrels containing three murdered boys in brine. Rest assured, the bishop lost no time in restoring them to life, and he has been the patron of children-in-a-pickle every since (I thought this a funny comment!!). Upon his death, he visited sailors to guide them through storm tossed seas..hence the patronage of sailors. A sweet-smelling myrrh-like substance oozes from his tomb in the San Nicola basilica in Italy, hence the patronage of perfumers.....He was martyred in the Diocletian persecution in 305...." Just some interesting facts. St. Nicolas is considered a saint who did saintly things...... and my Christian Church accepts saints and celebrates their days through out the year....soooooo maybe we should say that this is the work of some pretty petty fundamental people, instead????

Ked, Very true, but can you honestly say, the Santa~Claus we all grew up with, & watch every yr. is the same as the Christian Saint Nicolas? Times have changed & so do some beliefs. I personally an NOT a christian, but hold no animosity towards them, & their Holidays. or any other religious holidays of others. I do how ever come from a family that is very religious ( Christian ) & they have bickered for yrs. about the Commercialization of this particular Holiday, & the fact that they see more about Santa~Claus, Rudoph, & Frosty then about their Jesus.. Paul, I quoted information from a book that I picked up a couple years ago that deals specifically with the Saints. This book attributes our modern Santa Claus with St. Nicolas. Being a "converted" Catholic, I have a great interest in the history of this church and their traditions. The "cult of Saints" (as it is called) is pretty neat and came about in a time when the "common" people (i.e. those who did not speak latin) felt out of "touch" with the Catholic church. Many of the stories attributed to the Saints are mostly myth..... surely St. Nicolas did not find "pickled" children in the basement, afterall. But it makes for an amusing story, huh? And, it was something that the uneducated people of the middle ages could understand and relate to. Now, about the commercialization of Christmas. I whole heartedly agree!!! My immediate family (me, hubby and kids) are regular church goers and we do attend the children's mass every Christmas eve (when the kids are older, we will probably go to the midnight vigil). What bugs me the most about this, is how crowded the service is with people who only attend twice a year! Shame!!!
