What does anyone use as a protectant for the dash, etc. to keep it from cracking? Is that even possible when you have to park outside all day long in the hot sun? I guess mechanical methods like a car cover or a winshield screen would work, but I guess my question is, is there a "rejuvenator" for soft plastic like there is for leather?

What is the dash made out of, anyway, vinyl?

Thanks

I don't know that there is a rejuvenator, but I used to put a white towel across the dash whenever it would sit outside and bake.

Well, you don't want to use Armorall, it leaves a milky residue. I don't use anything. The only dash I have that cracked is on my '72. My '86 F-150's dash still looked good when I sold it, and it spent almost all it's life outside. Then again, I never parked it in a Texas furnace.

Come to think of it, my '76 Capri had a perfect dash, and it came from Arizona. {It was black, too}

Do modern dash pads crack anymore?

Some modern dashes do (85 EXP and 85 Thunderbird) both CA cars...
none of our current car's dashes have (90,91,95 and 98)
FWIW on the 91 Tow-rus I use "Lexol" I haven't had a problem, but it spends as much time as I can spare in my car port...
as always with cleaners and what not, YMMV...

A dash mat! It protects the dash and adds a bit of style too. It really looks good.

I've found 303 Protectant to be really good stuff. I use it on the dash, tires, the vinyl roof and interior of the 67. An upholstry shop recommended it, after warning me about Armour All - it rots the stitching in seat upholstry.

I use Turtle Wax and that works wonderful for me. I never have residue and it makes the dash look nice and shiny. It also picks up a lot of the dirt and whatnot (Armor All didn't when I had used it before) Good luck

My girlfriend's dash MELTED in Tucson. It cracked also. Even some of the trim(plastic) that goes up the window pillars melted and disfigured. Best thing to fight the sun IMO is a sunshade in the windshield and tint on the rest of the windows.

Thanks, y'all. I really appreciate it (& I'm writing all this down).

Just trying to give my baby all the right stuff, since it kinda takes a beating as a daily driver, and I consider summers around here to be "severe service."

Make sure you use a windowshade! That's the number 1. Also I use a product called SP 80 Black Beauty Coat. I have used this for the passed 8years and with the above combo I have yet to have a crack in my 33yr old dash.

SP 80 Products
J.K.A. International,Inc.
Monterey Park, CA. 91754

That's the address off the bottle. Good luck.

My Capri was from Tucson, and it was semi melted, too. I never noticed it until I saw another Capri and I noticed my dash was shaped differently. LOL

Yeah...just say that it was a custom made dash and only a couple hundred were made, thus making it worth thousands more

Well, I just heard a new one... I was showing my brother in law this thread and he said the best thing for dashes is "Baby Oil"... Keeps it looking new and never dries up... Only thing I'd be afraid of is that it might take the wrinkle finish out and make it a smooth as a baby's butt...

i have the same problem here my dash in my 77 ranchero was perfect till i moved here, its so dry it split wide open last week.so im kinda worried about my 70 cyclone dash.
i was also told armour all is the worst thing to use i had my dash fixed an he so no garantee if i use it he said it never dries just gets sucked up by the foam in the dash like a sponge.

Not so sure about the baby oil gig. The girls used to cover themselves with baby oil because it was a magnifier of rays. I had a 65 fastback from Phoenix. Not a lick of rust, but every piece of weatherstripping, dashpad, etc. was shot. I think a dash cover makes the most sense and keep in garage, etc. when possible.

I use Meguire's Shine product. Supposed to provide UV protection along with a nice rich shine as opposed to that fake looking gloss you get with Armour All. I won't use Armour All again anyway, as in the past I found it turns the tires this ugly brown color.

Whenever I work an 8 hour shift, I either completely cover the car or I at least use two window shades - One in the back and one in the front. After replacing both a dashpad and a rear package tray in the last 3 months, I don't want to do it again. The Californian sun destroys all..
