Went racing friday night (smoked the shadetree locals with street tires) need some help...here is one of my slips:+.225-----Reaction 2.022----60 ft (tires spinning 1st and 2nd) no data---330 ft 8.296-----1/8 mile ET 86.20-----1/8 mile MPH 10.779----1000 ft 12.867----1/4 ET (my personal best!) 107.40----1/4 MPH My Signature shows the car specs, 60 ft times are awful and before you tell me to get some slicks or "cheeters", I should let you know I would like to "best" my times with the street tires for now (275/50x17 nitto extreem drag radials, pretty soft for radials). I see guys with posts here with 1.5-1.7 60 ft times with "street" tires here all the time...Couldn't have got this far without all your help...any tips are appreciated...Robert

Great times, I'd try leaving alittle softer at lower rpm. ------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. My Pics

thanks Scoop...I'm leaving at 4000rpm with 100 lbs of tool box in the trunk. If I leave at 3900 the car grips and jerks a little but the 60ft is still in the 2.0-2.1 range...

Does the car leave with the front end up, is the rear up too ?What pressure do you run in the tires ? Do you get wheel hop at lower RPM's? I'd think with those tires you should be able to get your 60's down to 1.80's or better. ------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. I've never seen pics of the car leaving but the front end lifts some (CE 90/10's) rear end lifts very little...20 psi in the rear tires no wheel hop at lower rpm just kind of a jerky stutter at low rpm (3900 and lower)

No one knows more about this then Alex. But from what I've read, and I spend alittle time on here reading. You need to get the weight over the rear tire during launch. Is your battery in the trunk, front sway bar removed, what kind of rear shocks ?Read this lots of good info, https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000728.html https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Forum12/HTML/002480.html ------------------ SCOOP oddly obsessed with big scoops on little Mustangs 65 coupe,351w,C4,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,8" 3.40 TracLoc. Robert,
Not with street radials and your power level. For your power on street radials, high 1.7's to low 1.8's would be good. You can get there with the usual tricks. Get the car to transfer weight to the rear tires and not hit them too hard. Sounds easy doesn't it. SteveW

Sounds easy (lots of things "sound" easy), at my current experience level I don't know what to do next. I know this is not "rocket science" but with a 4spd how do you make the power off the line "not hit the tires to hard" without smoking your clutch?...Scoop- no sway bar battery in the trunk Rancho adjustables for rear shocks (full soft on right, one click on left) Smoke 'em off the line and in 2nd, I have to pedal it once or twice to hook 'em back up and my 60ft time goes in the gutter (face down like the ghetto child I am). Sorry, but I have to laugh once in a while...Any more suggestions... (Scoop, I'm going to read those posts now)

Back when I did plenty of street racing, I always tried to race on radials. The 'chevy boys' had 400's that would blow the tires off (even with an automatic), then wheeze off on the top end. (aftermarket heads were not that common at this time on the street)I would launch around 1800 rpm by dumping the clutch as soon as the hand was dropped. The discipline was to keep it around 1/4 throttle until the tires quit spinning. (only a very short distance) After they would hook, push the throttle to the floor, but not so fast as to get the tires spinning again. Overrev it a tad in 1st (makes for less of a transition to 2nd), then make a SMOOTH shift into 2nd. After that, you just drive. The lower torque of the 302, and a practiced man at the wheel made for plenty of successful street races. With slicks on the street, things could be turned up a bit. Slicks on the track, WFO BABY!!!!! What you really need, are slicks! ET-Streets or Hoosier Quick Time Pros if they need to be DOT approved. But you need something with a soft sidewall to absorb the shock loads of the stickshift. Once you start racing with slicks, you'll be hooked! A 2-step rev limiter is also one of those must have items for a stick shift car. They allow you to launch CONSISTENTLY, without worrying about launch rpm. You can still launch at part throttle.... or WIDE OPEN, if that is what suits you. Wide Open at redline is how I get my best et. Of course, you'll find the weak links in your drivetrain. I suggest at least a 4-pinion t-loc or a Detroit Locker... and 31 spline axles for extra hard launches on slicks. Good luck! ------------------ Mike Burch 66 mustang real street 302 4-speed 289 heads 10.63 @ 129.3 http://www.geocities.com/carbedstangs/cmml_mburch.html http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/healey/367 http://www.mustangworks.com/cgi-bin/moi-display.cgi?220

Try leaving at 4000 and dont stab it just hold it till you get moving then roll your foot into it. It takes some practice but that should get it out further so it will spin less.Or just put slicks on it and Go fast.
