i set out about a month ago to build a decent performing 302 for my dads full size 76 ford f100. well after many nights and weekends it still doesnt run. first problem was the headers didnt fit the right bank. after much cutting, welding, grinding, they finally fit. then the starter went bad and i had to remove them again to replace that. the water pump was debated since its such a pain in the a$$ to get to once all the accessories are bolted on the front of the motor. well i said that it worked fine when we took it off, lets keep it. it leaked almost immediately after startup. i think that plate behind the pump gasket has burned me at least a dozen times on the smallblock ford. im not kidding, at least a dozen times. also, after a few test drives, the oil pump drive shaft drops into the pan and didnt get noticed till the water temp got to 260. after draining the oil removing the pan, found the shaft bent into an s-shape laying there. still dont know how that happened. through all this there has been a massive vaccuum leak. a majority of it at the base of the carb. i broke a large section of the corner off dads 600 holley base plate trying to get it tight enough so it wouldnt leak. after which i found the divider on the performer intake is higher than the outside edges. this is $70 out of my pocket and only God knows why the intake isnt flat. its been nowhere but from the box to the motor. obviously this hasnt been a good experience for me and my reputation and ego have both suffered in the process. the headers werent the only mod required. had to cut off the vaccuum advance can on the distributor because no matter how i dropped it in, i couldnt get it in time. theres only about an inch or so between the a/c bracket and the thermostat housing, couldnt turn the darn thing! i did pin the rod so it doesnt move or affect the advance. if im lucky, the only thing left is fix the carb, replace the water pump, and tune the setup. its supoosed to be cold and rainy from now on...WHAT ELSE CAN GO WRONG!

the stang is retired for the year with a burned out clutch and posi and a busted bypass hose. got the m/t's deflated and in the garage under cover (car sits outside all year because of 49 chevy pickup project). finally got the new baseplate on tonight. as far as the weather goes, snow might not be that much of a miracle right now.
