I lived in Dayton for over four years and never heard of a drag strip there. The rest are too far away from me.

Sorry,

Tom, The last time I went to the races at Grand Island NE was in 1960, I remember it clearly because it was the first time I had seen the new 360 HP 352 run. The anouncer was making funny comments about ford performance while the Starliner staged but after it ran his comment was "wow, maybe they are performance cars" The track was located at an airport runway on the east side of Grand Island and I remember driving across railroad tracks to get to the parking area.

I hope this helps locate it.

Tom,

Virginia Beach Motorsports Park was located in an area of Virginia Beach, Va. called Creeds and was in operation from the early 60's to 1986. It originally was a 1/4 mile track, changed to a 1/5 and finally to 1/8 as cars kept getting faster. Shut down area was limited. When first opened it was called Creeds Dragway, changed management and was called Freedom Seven Dragway and ended up as Virginia Beach Motorsports Park. Over the years, it changed hands a number of times. I raced there quite often in my youth and can remember racing four cars at a time with a flagman. I actually tried to reopen it back in the 1980's with some of the previous management but the city of Virginia Beach wanted to much. Concrete is still there but grown over.

Thanks for the inquiry. Your question brought back many memories.

Tom,

I forgot to ask, are you compiling data for a listing of tracks or perhaps a book of some type? Just curious as there are many, many small time tracks throughout the US.

Good Luck with your efforts.

The drag strip in Idaho was called "Thunder Ridge" and it was west of Boise near Star, Idaho.

They even have some video of races there. I will send you more information, soon.

On the Nauvoo (Al) Drag Strip: I lived in Nauvoo until age 5. Then grew up less than 15 miles away. (Age 36 now). Never heard of it.

I wonder if maybe that was a former name for the Winston County Dragstrip. It is about 4-5 miles from Nauvoo and is still in operation. It's located about 75 miles NW of Birmingham. Prob is the oldest operating track in the state. Grew up going there. I consider it one of the birthplaces of Pro Mod. Several guys from there went on to start Pro Mod in the IHRA. Hugh Scott prob the biggest name. But others also. They were running Mountain Motors and nitrous way back in the late 70's here.

The track is 1/8 mile, but is now raced on 600 ft vs 660. It's a little short and some of the Pro Mods can run high 3's, so they need room to stop.

I know live about 2hrs away, but still go back every now and then.

Later,

David Cole

Tom,

There also was a drag strip in Pocatello, Idaho, that was abandon a few years ago. Would you like information on it?

David,

I have raced Pro-Mod at Winston County about five years ago against ol Hugh, hell of a racer. There is also a track just across the miss st line from tuscaloosa that races on sunday afternoon and a lot of pro-mod racers go there including hugh.

Hope everything is going ok for you with the car. Mine is about ready to paint.

Geez thanks guys!! wow, great response, the Pocatello track is being replaced by a new one called Snake River... supposed to be nearby.

I had found Creeds, was unsure of the name change. I've found with some tracks the name changes every couple years.

This is for a book project...it'll take a while, gotta find EVERY dragstrip first

There used to be one in Sanford, Maine. It was dissolved, and some of the people went on to open New England Dragway in '65.

The track I attended was a lot closer to the railroad tracks. The highway and the tracks look like the right area but maybe they built a new airport. It was 42 years ago but I'm sure the track (no grandstand and temporary equipment) was very close to the tracks, 1/2 block at the most.

Thanks for your advise on the FE project.

thanks for the tips

JC
hmmm Grand Island isn't THAT big a place... here's an overhead shot of the whole eastern side
http://terraserver.homeadvisor.msn.com/image.asp?S=13&T=1&X=348&Y=2833&Z=14&W=2

I don't see much. But then again a lot can happen in 40 years.

Jessie, that reunion sounds great, they have one for our oldest local club (1951) and a couple more this year... a good time to recall all this history before the participants aren't around any more.
