Yeeee Hawwww!!
New best ET for the 289.

First run off the trailer was:
12.791 @ 106.23 with a solid 1.900 60 footer.
and a top end miss.

Well, I couldn'y leave well enough alone. So, I figured must be lean. I rejetted the primaries to 74's and raised the float a little. That should do it I said. So I put every thing together and checked for leaks. Everything looks good. Made my 2nd pass. 13.79. What the heck! So back to the truck I go. Put everything back to same configuration as first run. It was now elimination time. I dialed in a 12.84
Made my 3rd pass of the evening. Another 13.8? and a red light to top it off. I was so pissed I tossed my slip out the window diving back to my pit spot.

Murpys Law Says: If it can be F__ked up, Ted is the man to do it!!

The problem ended up being I bent the accelerator pump arm when I reassembled the carb after changing the jets the first time. This causing a severe stumble off the line. It's always the little things that get you.
So this weekend will be carb adjusting time.

Ted: Were you raising the float on a Motorcraft carb? That is a very difficult process you may have flooded it, As those carbs are very hard to race with IE: no more than 6.25 lbs pressure at any time.

Hey Marcus,

I was shooting for 12.7 and I made it. However, I need to run it consistantly to say it will run a 12.7. I am seriously thinking of a different carb this off season. I have about 3 more Wed. nights to work with this Holley before the track closes til Feb. And then again, I think with a good tranny and having rearend setup correctly I will probably have a 12.3 car. But that's a goal for next year.

It's was a brain fart on my end really.

I installed one of those Holley quick change jet kits on the primary side and the #32 nozzles.. Well, I installed it at the house before I left and didn't get a chance to start the car. I got to the track and had a hell of a time keeping it running just to get it off the trailer. I chalked it up to the cold weather. Finally warmed up and backed off the trailer and drove around the pits. I went to the return road and from a dead stop I nailed it. It just died!! It did this unless I held it against the brake with thr RPM's up. I went back and put in the 28's I originally had. Now that I think about it, even with the 12.7 pass I had to really keep the revs up at the line.

It should have clicked, But didn't until I woke up last night. But I really think the new fuel bowl in the jet conversion kit is not the same dimensionally as my original bowl, thus causing the slop in the accelerator pump linkage.

I will no more tonight when I pull it apart and measure them.

Anyway, timing is at 18 initial, 42 full @ 3800 RPM with the 28 squirters.

Update......

Pulled apart the 50cc squirter and found I had installed the spring upside down when swapping to the holley quick change jet kit. DUHHH!!

OH well, learn from the past and live to race another day.

I run 2 carbs...'cause its more foolproof and lets face it when it comes to me and small fidgety bits...foolproof is GOOD

Two carbs and 4 float bowls has another HUGE benefit... i can get away with almost NO fuel pressure, i usually only run 3 or 4 psi the car will make it past half track without the pump even being on!

Maybe if i dont *&#% with anything it'll run a "9" this weekend...if mother nature allows right now she don't look too good

Good luck on your quest for the nines Tomp. It will be a great personal accomplishment. I know what it was like when I ran the first legal superstock 10 second ET with an automatic 289 Ford that it was very gratifying and went down in history. Bob Frey was there and he called the car "The 289 from Hell"! It was something that I will never forget. I have the time slip framed too! Alex

Good luck Tom! All this talk about carburetors is confusing...I couldn't tune my lawnmower if I tried.

Now fuel injection...that's more like it!

Mom Nature complied...it stopped pi$$ing early this AM... but the car had other ideas...line lock wouldnt work, making burnouts too brief. The thing was popping and banging all the way downtrack...only a 10.27

looks like your getting quicker. I will be at a dead stand still for a while. Broke my tranny last night. Good thing there are only three more weeks left in this season.. I'm just trying to figure out which body part to auction off on Ebay to pay for this much needed piece.
