I have noticed a difference of almost a half second between open headers and a complete 2 1/2 exhaust system. However, with the exhaust in place the bottom end felt stronger.I'm looking for some opinions on running open headers on your SB with the reducers bolted on and without.

What headers are you running? If you were running your long-tubes open, try adding 3"x18" long collector extensions. This will give you back the torque you lost. -- You can fine-tune the extensions by drawing a crayon mark from the header to the end of the collector extension. Make a good hard run, then check your crayon mark. Cut the extension near where the crayon mark is melted away. Leave yourself an inch or so leeway. Remember, it's easier to cut more of the collector extension off later than to add a piece. Does this answer your question?IP: Logged |

That's quite impressive...would you care to share your et's and 60' times?I like running the race car corked up so much I've never even tried running open headers with the latest combination...I also like the abundance of torque leaving the line; combined with the silence of a full system, it can be intimidating to opponents, especially those who are at the faster end of the bracket, since I run in the 11.40's and get to leave on them... As an aside, when I used to run open headers on my 289, I put a 2 1/2" (that's right) x 18" collector extension on and it made the enigne sound so sweet, especially in the top end, when it was spinning 7300 or so going through the lights...almost sounded like 180 degree headers... Much more fun than being corked up but I must say I've won much more money with the current combination...go figure..*G* Pat ------------------ 64.5 D-code coupe 65 A-code FB drag car IP: Logged |

Personally I favor the sweet whine of a turbo (or two) while flying down the track!------------------ Jay Kilroy 68' Fastback GT 390 "No such thing as a cam thats too big" IP: Logged |

Ted,This isn't very scientific, but we did get back to back runs a few weeks ago. The first pass corked up was 13.123 @ 108.246, 2.5" 2 chamber flows w/turn-downs. The second run with open headers and exhaust removed 12.916 @ 110.112, no collectors. Third run w/headers removed was 12.83 @ 110.3 (the next morning) SteveW IP: Logged |

Open headers will always run quicker and faster when the engine is tuned with the maximum jetting and timing. Alex------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator Fleet of FoMoCo's too long to list! http://superstockers.homestead.com/week.html IP: Logged |
