That's great! It at least makes it interesting to have some Fords in the field. I get tired of seeing so many Firechickens! When the Fords don't make the show, I pull for the Mopars. How about Hurley? That guy has been to almost every National, but has only qualified maybe once. I admire his dedication. IP: 209.240.200.83 |

I thought about the Cougar Tom, I'll be it's the one that Stu Evans ordered from Haas to use in IHRA Pro Stock. You probably know, but Evans pulled his program before taking delivery of the new car.IP: 209.240.200.103 |

That's good news... I've been wondering if and when a new Bob Glidden would emerge from the Ford camp to again set the Pro Stock ranks on their ear.I've lost interest in Pro Stock in recent years because of the lack of brand competition... Oof.... as nice as it is to not to be a firebird, I don't think that bodystyle suits the pro stck treatment to well... the rear wheel area looks wrong for some reason... ------------------ Marcus Fast, Reliable, Cheap.... Renowned chassis builder Jerry Haas was driving, the car had trouble all weekend, only got down the track once all weekend. I just got back last night, damn, was it cold and fast there! Robert Patrick was in and out on all 4 sessios, finally ran a 6.911 to end up #14, giving him the dubious honor of racing the Professor of Pro Stock round 1. And when WJ had the better light, well, I think we know what the end result was. The other Ford also had trouble, Hurley Blakeny, having a pair of aborted runs, and a 6.93 best. Other Ford notes from the weekend: -Gene McBean won SS/FA class with his CJ '69 Mustang over a 4 car field and got to 8 cars in S/S eliminator before losing to the king of IHRA, Anthony Bertozzi, who who went on to get his second NHRA R/U of the season. -Ray Scardelli won GT/H class on a single with his 289 powered '97 Probe (not that many could run with him anyway). -Bob Hammell had the quickest GT/GA of the 10 (!!!) that showed for class. Unfortunatle, Bob lost second round with his 460 powered '88 T-bird. -Jerry Arnold, the current points leader in Comp Eliminator, qualified #6 won with his E/ED straight-six 250 cid Ford powered dragster. Steve Ambrose, with a similar style powerplant (although a larger cid motor and billet head as to Arnold's cast head) qualified #3 and lost round two when he lifted early to avoid another CIC infraction in his record holding I/A Bantam. -John Pressing qualified #1 in Stock with his L/S '88 Mustang with a 11.832 which is -1.168 seconds under the Index. Dean Cook put his F/S '72 Mustang 351 car in the #4 spot with a -1.091 second 11.009 run. Don't you love having an on-site reporter? Mike Carr

Did I hear you right Mike, a 250 straight six? Are you sure its not a 240 or 300 (removable intake)? No, I am not questioning your reporting just very interested :>). What times does he run in the dragster? Maybe he is runnning an Aussie 250. Anyone know anything about this engine?

NHRA Comp Eliminator, the home of any and all oddities and/or oddball car/engine combo's. Jerry Arnold runs E/ED (6.00 or more pounds per cubic inch, inline or opposed 6-cylinder engines, 2 valve only). His dragster has a Ford 253 cubic inch straight-6 motor, and on a class Index of 9.14, ran as quick as 8.483 during the event on his win, and a huge step towards his first World Championship. Steve Ambrose runs a '32 Bantam in I/A (5.5 pounds or more per cid, inline or opposed 5 or 6 cylinder engines only) with a 302 cid straight 6 motor. He qualified #3 with a 7.810 run, on his class Index of 8.51. The motors do not have to be exact cid, like Stock or S/S motors. The block may be an original for, say, a 250, but they may bore or stroke the motor to the desired cid (more cid = heavier car). By the way, the #1 qualifier (with an AWESOME -.786 run of 8.314 was my buddy Frank Aragona Jr, from NY, with a pancake design 6 cylinder 203 cid SUBARU!!! Yes, that's right, I said Subaru! Frankie lost in round 1, when he lifted early to avoid a huge CIC penalty, due to the awesome weather conditions prevelant at Maple Grove this past weekend. Frank's motor is a 4-valve motor, and runs G/ED class. Best Engineered Car award winner was another Comp car, a 123 cid Volkswagon powered G/D of another friend of mine, Michelle "Ladybug" Costa, from NJ. So, Comp has a little of everything for you, and is one of the most complex classes, and one of the hardest to explain, with the CIC's, Index, classes, -.50 and -.61, etc. yet? Jerry Arnolds engine is not a 250 style, but a 240-300 style, just short stroke big bore, it goes by pounds per cubic inch so a lighter car runs a smaller motor.IP: 64.20.53.38 |

OOPS! I probably should have told you about that when I knew about it long long time ago. I had suspected it was just a rumor though. I saw Templates at INdy when we were there. I was suprised, but then again, all of them guys wil be running small car junk now. Sunfires, Cavaliers, Neons, Cougars, Mustangs of course are the only rear wheel drive car that is going to be out there. I wonder if a Buick or olds might pop up as a PS car.Tony. OK, so much for a Pro Stock Cougar. Here's a CLASSIC Cougar, also a drag car, one many of us racers will like, ESPECIALLY M&M member Bart Kilraine, since it is HIS car. Mike Carr
