hello everyone. I've got a 65 with a rebuilt 289 with 30k on it, no mods. I'm looking into building up the car. I'm doing suspension and brakes now, but am planning out performance. I want to run at least 13.5 in the 1/4. It is a daily driver and money is slow. If I were to put in a new block I would go 351W (maybe 393?) I'm looking for all the help I can get. Looking for a dependable car. Thanks a lot, all your feedback is highly appreciated.

Start with what you have now.
Tell us more about your set up, trans, rear gears, what carb and intake and exhaust do you have now ?

The car is stock. It has the auto cruisomatic with the green dot. 3:1 gears. 2 barrel and stock exhaust.

The first thing I'd do is get some long tube headers with a good 2.25"-2.5" free flowing dual exhaust system. Next Add a holley 600vs and a RPM intake and a 270h comp cam. Some 3.55 gears with tracloc limited slip and some good sticky tires.

Would those mods get me into the low 13s? If not, I can afford to waiste money on parts I wont be using after I get a new motor in. Its hard to do , but I need everything right on the first try. Thanks a lot for stickin with me.

Ok I understand better now. I was just trying to save you alittle money. I don't see those upgrades getting you into the low 13's but I could be wrong about that too.

So for the 393w I'd try and find a good used block to start with. And next ask around for the best builder/machine shop in your area.Do some flat top 10-1 compression pistons a comp 280S cam and RPM heads or AFR 185 heads,RPM or Vic jr intake with a 750 holley,3.80 gears you'll be running low 13's high 12's easy all day long, if you can get traction.

If your asking for just the short block, about $1800-$3000 depends on the parts used.
