ok, after doing a search and having problems with my alternator wiring, i have read about the 1 wire alts. these cant be bought at a local parts store can they, or do i have to order from a supplier? if thats the only way then does anyone have any links to 1 wire alts? and how many amp alt. do i need? im just running basic stuff, i.e lights, t/s, and a radio. would appreciate a quick answer which i usually get from this site anyway. and is there a 1 wire conversion kit i can get so i can keep my new alternator? but i need to get this car running, eliminate the rigged wiring/voltage reg. and get back to work. have not worked in 8 days cause of this mess. thanks

i use what is called a 1 wire alt but it actually has 2 wires. it is a gm alt. the big wire gos to the batt. and the little one gos to a connection that is hot when the ign is on. this triggers the alt to charge. you can put a toggle switch on the little wire and turn off the alt when you are racing. i think!!!

what gm alternator is it? i mean what vehicle application does it go to? or did you have to order it from a specialty shop?

Yes I use the mini voltage reg that bolts to the back of the alt.It works great so far.I have more volts at idle then ever with the same alt as before the conversion.

well i ordered the part from the web site and the alternator that is for the falcon is the same as the f-100 i use, duralast. do you suggest i get the alt. tested before i apply the mini regulator seeing since ive been changing the old alt. wires around? and i can just tape up my old regulator and alt.harness and tuck it away, and just plug my lights back in? im stoked about this upgrade, how long did it take for you to get the part shipped? anyway i ordered 2 for backup. thanks for the lead on the mini regulator, ill post my results when i get it hooked up. if there is anything i need to know about checking volts, installation, ect. let me know

I think it should just wire up and your set.
You can have your alt tested 1st it wont hurt. And most places like Kragen test for free.
I got mine in about two days.
Just make sure to run a good 6-8ga new wire from the mini voltagre reg to the soleniod.

fastymz, it says to run a 10 ga wire from the bat to the + side of the solonoid, do i need to have a fusible link (14 ga.) at the solonoid? and it says to put the 10/32 nut on each ground then put the regulator on. my alt already has 2 10/32 nuts on it and it raises the regulator off the alt. about 3/8 " then i put my ground on and use the other 10/32 nuts to secure it. does this sound correct? because if i put the nuts on top of the nuts that came with the alt, i dont have any room to bolt the regulator down. so if 3/8" is enough im going to let it ride. i believe its just so the wires dont get in a bind and stressed. i want to do this right. those are the only 2 questions i have, i have everything else bolted down correctly. oh had the alt tested and it was pushing 20 volts but said the diode was good so i replaced the alt. good thing. thanks

You can leave the nuts already there, and just bolt it on top of them. Also yes you need a 10ga wire.I didn't use any type of fuse. You can hook a a gauge up I'm not sure about using the prange line.I just use a voltage gauge.Hooked into a keyed power source.
