I've posted this on other forums without getting a real satisfactory answer. Maybe you guys can help. I'd like to install back-up lights on my trusty 64 1/2 convertible BUT I don't have a pattern for the holes I'll have to cut AND I'm afraid of messing up my paint in the process. Any ideas/recommendations?

I would take the panel off the car and make my cuts on a blanket covered workbench. Then I'd use the smallest cutting tool I could get away with. Maybe even my Dremel.Measure twice, cut once! ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 M code 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 open '72 Mustang Sprint Coupe 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Lok '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip '97 Probe GTS 2.5L DOHC My Photo Page Ever wonder why they call it 'dogma?'

Dave, I've allways covered the area with masking tape. It seems to help keep the chiping down.------------------ 65 Coupe with a 351w, RPM intake,carter625,shorty 1-5/8 headers,2.5 exhaust,Flowmasters,Black Magic electric fan, stock C4,peg leg 8" 2:80,Big Boss 429 hood scoop,Cragers SS,Black Suede finish. https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/Fastymz.html

And to think that I filled in the back up lite holes on my 68 valance!! Looks better without them. And they throw about as much light as a lightning bug! But... if you must have them, use a sabre saw with a fine metal blade and cover with tape to avoid messing up the paint. In an old back issue of MMonthly, there is a template. I don't know which one.

I would think he could use the gaskets as templates. Maybe someone with an early Mustang could measure out their valance panel so Dave could lay it out on his valance correctly. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 M code 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 open '72 Mustang Sprint Coupe 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Lok '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip '97 Probe GTS 2.5L DOHC My Photo Page In life, we all choose our favorite illusions

You know, it's funny, but my '65 doesn't have the valance backup lights, and I think it looks cool that way! It's a nice, clean look under there. Of course, it is a bit awkward backing up at night...I have to keep hitting the brakes so the tail lights can get bright enough for me to see where I'm going! ------------------ *andy* ([email protected]) also known as...***Boss Hoss*** *1965 Mustang 289 coupe* *1996 Mustang GT coupe*

Dave, I believe back-up lights were an option until the '66 model. I have owned my '65 for 22 years and it does have the B/U lights (and they do work well at night). My car is a heavily optioned car though. I would reconsider adding them if you intend on keeping the car because we all know such a modification may affect the value since you are adding an non-original feature. The other side of conventional wisdom is do what makes you happy because it probably wont leave your ownership in the near term. :-)------------------ MarkC ~ 1970 Mach 1 T-5 1965 coupe vintage racer

Adding original style back up lites on a non back up lite 65 will not affect originality anymore than MCA concours winning 65's that have added on style wheels, hood mldg., rocker mldgs, orig AC add on(a definite value enhancer}engine dress up kits, radio on a non radio car, pass side outside mirror, etc. While I may personally dislike them from an appearance standpoint {individual opinion} they would be a worthwhile addition. And, while it may change the car, color changes are common and a new door data plate will fix that. It's a controversial deal but I wouldn't keep a car with a color I didn't like. Had I kept my lime metallic 68 Shelby{that hadn't yet been put in registery} it would have hit the street in white with blue stripes!! It's now red! Jerry Heasley, a noted Mustang writer once said there are probably more 65/6 red onvertibles now than when new!! LOL!! The restomod movement has changed a lot of attitudes but I have found that the biggest critics at shows are those who do NOT even have a Mustang! I catch a ration from some because I have an 89 5.0 in my 65 GT. It looks original but the decal on the hi-po air cleaner says 5.0 4V HO just like the 85 air cleaner. I believe that I could get as much or maybe more for that car the way it is. Please excuse the long post.

70machT-5: Not to worry, I've owned my 64 1/2 convertible since '69 and my kids would be outraged if I ever sold it. There is even a provision in my will for it's future! I'm still only thinking about adding B/U lights. The car is very early production (May 17,'64)and the lights were NOT available that early. The car is otherwise VERY correct and mostly original; it even has a PCV that can be disassembled for cleaning!

Hey send him the cut outs! lol an other idea, park so you don't have to back up Hee Hee. Worked for me once when I lost reverse in my Torino GT.
To bad it's not the front valance I'd give you one. My 65 Didn't have them either of course why would I need them with 20 hours of day light? lol ------------------ WAYNE CURTIS 70 GRABBER GREEN BOSS 302 01 Focus ZX3 03 Boss 281 (waiting on order form) 92 SHELBY 4X4 (K-9 IDITAROD LEAD DOG) http://www.iditarodtrail.com "If your under control then your not going fast enough" Parnelli Jones
