i was wondering what the heck these things do anyway. a buddy of mine says that they're essentially a smog pump. i don't see many of these on rebuilt engines, so can i guess that the parts aren't needed? i've got the 289/2V/auto and was wondering what would happen if i were to remove all of the pump, pump filter, and the accompanying hoses. would it hurt the engine or could i get any benefits from less drag on the motor, plus less weight. thanksjeff IP: 152.163.204.74 |

jeff,The thermactor system was Ford's (and the other manufacturer's) attempt at reducing emissions by injecting fresh air into the combustion's hot exhaust gases and burning any unburned pollutants after the combustion had occurred. Modern electronic fuel injection has eliminated the need for this, and since you live in California and have a pre '73 vehicle, you don't have to worry about it either. So eliminating it is fine and will save you a couple hp by not having to drive the air pump. Further gains can be acheived by porting the heads and removing the thermactor bump in the exhaust ports. Hope this helps SteveW IP: 205.188.197.171 | |
