In the rack&pinion thread, John Z pointed out a couple links, and one is this page on oil filters.
http://www.htrd.com/htrd/oilfilters.html

This was pretty enlightening. The page was written by an electrical engineer, but his reasoning seems sound.

This comparison make my old standard, Fram, look pretty bad.

Are there other tests on oil filters you are aware of?

Here are a couple oil filter makers;
http://www.pureoil.com/oil.htm
http://www.fram.com/oilfilters.html

Still looking for an oil filter test site.

Consumer Reports had nothing.

I saw that oil filter study awhile back,Fram made him tone down the site or face a law suit!I compared a standard Ford Fram filter with a Motocraft and was amazed how cheap looking the Fram is.Kinda scarey.

Fram used to be number 1. I wonder what happened?

They are made by Allied Signal. The same people that bring us Autolite sparks plugs!

I used to work in the auto parts business and one day we were bored and cut a AC, Fram, Motorcraft and a no name filter in halve to see what the big difference was. The paper in these filters was almost identical except the motorcraft looked like a better quality filter. I have used Fram on all my vehicles except the mustang and have never had any problems. Besides I work for AlliedSignal and I need to keep a job

The great filter debate is an endless one. Quality seems to vary from year to year for each manufacturer. I have noticed over the years that Bosch seems to make consistently high quality filters of all types.

Of course, that could change...

Anyone have any info on Hastings oil

I don't know about Hastings.

It was nice to see Motorcraft, which they claim is a Purolator, got favorable reviews.

I've noticed in the auto store the other day that K&N has an oil filter out, i wonder if they are any good?, and if they make them for v-8 applications (the ones i saw were small).

I have a Pennsoil in my Truck!!
We just put one of those Fram w/teflon in the explorer we just finished rebuilding!

wow i never would have guessed the poor quality of the Fram oil filters (what about air filters?). They used to be a good brand, so you always assume that they are still a good brand, even though they are putting junk on the shelves, that we are subsequently putting in our cars.

it's bad when a big company uses brand recognition to make more $$. i know some people that work for wells blue bunny (ice cream plant) and they tell me the boxes have all kinds of brand names on them but the mix never changes. some of the store brands sell for a lot less for the same product. you like the name so we pay more and they give us less.

You definately have to watch your back these days.

Hey, that's what we're all here at M&M for!

We'll watch each other's backs!

So far, we know to use Motorcraft, Purolator or Wix {even AC if you can stand it} oil filters, until we find more research.

The Purolator appears to be one of the best!
I confirmed, by comparison, that the "PRO LINE" filter sold by Pep Boys is a Purolator.

At about $2 each, it's a real deal.

For my '65 Mustang, however, I use the Motorcraft, I have always had good luck with them, and can always find the one for my car.
