Seems that rack and pinion steering is all the rage. How many people out there are interested in this conversion? ------------------ Jay Kilroy 68' Fastback GT 390 IP: 205.229.142.209 |

I have a manual rack and pinion setup rom TCP for sale if you want it. I had it on my car long enough for my wife to say she couldn't park it. A real trick part. Can be converted to power rack, but I didn't want to clutter the engine compartment. MaxIP: 152.163.206.207 |

Having just about finished a total rebuild of my original front end my steering gear will be staying for a while too. However, I started with Fox chasis cars and moved BACK to the classics (What can I say, I have good taste). The idea of replacing the steering box, center link, control valve, power ram, idler arm, pittman arm, and a pair of tie-rod ends with a rack & pinion setup is mighty inviting. There is a lot less to break on a modern rack, its a lot lighter (Got to be 75 lbs) and easier to get parts for. I can get a better ratio and get rid of a ton of clutter under the car. ------------------ Jay Kilroy 68' Fastback GT 390 IP: 205.229.142.209 |

Those '65-'70 power ram set ups are not the best. I'd want to replace those, too.My '72 has a pretty good system. The Saganaw box is a pretty reliable unit. ------------------ SteveLaRiviere/Administrator '72 Mustang Sprint 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac-Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip '97 Probe GTS 2.5L DOHC/CD4E IP: 209.222.109.202 |

That is a nice setup and there are a ton of boxes available out there considering how many cars used (still use) them. The power ram setup is just one big leak that helps you steer! Have you gone to the Total Control site and checked out the KRC power steering pump? It sounds good cause you can adjust the output pressure. They sell a kit for $480 and you can buy the pumps, with pulley, from various circle track sites for less than $250. For some reason I think I could fab a bracket, hoses, and tank for way less than $230. ------------------ Jay Kilroy 68' Fastback GT 390 IP: 205.229.142.209 |
