Took of the decklid to paint it. Now I can't get the torsion bars to hold the trunk up.. When I took them off they didn't seem to have mush tension on them. I even took pictures of the arrangement before disassembly. No matter what I do or how I put them in they won't hold the trunk up!!! I feel like a complete idiot, but am out of ideas. Any words of wisdom? ------------------ 1965 Convertible - 289 2V IP: 207.136.26.207 |

You know, of course that you adjust the tension of those torsion bars by the mounting holes on one side and a series of ways on the other, right? Are they in the position that gives them the most twist? Are they interchangeable side to side? If so, have you tried reversing them? ------------------ SteveLaRiviere/Administrator '72 Mustang Sprint 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac-Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip '97 Probe GTS 2.5L DOHC/CD4E IP: 208.161.31.203 |

Steve - There are 3 mounting holes on each side. According to the Shop Manual the further back they are placed the more tension. Don't know what you mean by mounting holes on one side. Both sides are the same. I have tried them in each location to no avail. They seem not to be interchangable side to side because when you hold them together at one end the other end points in another direction???------------------ 1965 Convertible - 289 2V IP: 207.136.19.187 |

Gary, the torsion bars are bent and have a "bow" in them to maintain tension. When they are removed and sit un-bowed for any length of time they will straighten and lose some of that tension. You may have to bend them strategicaly to get it back. This is not uncommon as new ones get this way on the shelf. Alex------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator

Gary, I meant each torsion bar has a hole[s] on one side and ways on the other side.------------------ SteveLaRiviere/Administrator '72 Mustang Sprint 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac-Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip '97 Probe GTS 2.5L DOHC/CD4E IP: 208.51.219.212 |
