Hey guys and gals, I might be buying a new toy. Is this a good deal? Its a 1965 Convertable, 6cyl with a 3 speed, bronze with a tan interior and top. The car is in great shape, AC and power top. He is asking $9500, I can probably get it for $8500 or so. I was just looking for a good driver and this looks like it would be nice. The guy says no rust california car but I have yet to see it. Lets assume its rust free. Is this a go? I know upgrading to a V8 later would be a bitch but good V8 converts are going for a lot more than this. I looked at a really pretty blue 65 down in southern CA for, oh, a cool 18,000. Non-GT, nice car ($5000 paint job) ------------------ Jay Kilroy 68' Fastback GT 390 IP: 205.229.142.209 |

Way too much money for a six cylinder convertable Jay. I know that the market is crazy right now due to the good economy, but I would not pay that for one! Alex------------------ Alex Denysenko Co-Administrator and Moderator

YMMV, but any time I see an ad for a 6-banger Mustang, I pass it by as a LOSER (and they are always trying to get way more than the car is worth). The loser is stuck with an undesirable car he is trying to sell, so he inflates the price, hoping that the car will be seen as more valuable. It isn't IMHO. 'Course if that's what you want... that's your business. 8500 is high, though IMHO. I found a deal for a hopped-up 289 V-8 67 for 4000. Yeah, I guess the deal fell through, but you get the picture. Good luck, -jc IP: 209.184.1.28 |

Well I don't really have a problem with a 6 personally. I am looking for a nice driver and gas is right at 2 bucks a gallon out here in the San Francisco Bay area. That motivates me to get a car that will not drink down the gas. Do the 6 cyl blocks have the same rear bolt pattern as the 289/302? If so I may put an AOD in one to help me out even more in the gas department.I know that with a decent 289 and an AOD or T5 I could get 20+ mpg but V8 drop tops draw the bucks out here. Another car I found is a small block 67 drop top, nice car, no AC like the 65, but clean. The advantage there is that I could share a good number of parts with my 68 Fastback. The guy is asking $11,500 for that one. ------------------ Jay Kilroy 68' Fastback GT 390 IP: 205.229.142.209 |

That is actually a pretty good price for one out here in Cali ($8K would be a great buy). Everyone wants them, guess it is part of the California image. Look through a Hemmings or classified ads, all the higher priced and higher sought after cars are "rust free California cars" and most arent in Cal anymore :>). As far as the 6 cylinders being losers and undesirable, I have got more offers for my '65 coupe w/ a 200 than my friends with '65 w/ 289's have :>). Those friends are shocked too :>). These arent low prices either and have been tempted a number of times. I guess not everyone wants a cookie cutter V8 Mustang.Jay, sorry to say but the 200 does not have the same bolt pattern as the small block :>(. The 250 and some newer 200's have the small block pattern but that means a swap. These gas prices suck. ------------------ Tim 1965 Mustang coupe, 200 ci w/ a Holley 2300 come.to/65mustang IP: 32.100.154.6 |

Yeah, I guess I stuck my foot in my mouth this time Nothing wrong with a six-banger, if that's what you want. Not what I want, but I can see there might be advantages (see the gas price thread in Sam's Place). What I want is a road racer that'll get-n-go on one of the only half-dozen passing zones on my hour commute. Any car that drives well and has the beauty of a Mustang has merit. Sorry I derided six-bangers just because that's not what I want. -jc IP: 207.193.40.79 |

jkilroy, Don't worry about it. We all like different things in life. If we all liked the same exact things, life would be awfully boring. I made two phone calls today on two different Mustangs. One was a 65 Fastback and the other a 65 Hipo Coupe for $6,500. Both had already been sold. I was a little leary about the Coupe. Was it a real "K" code or was the engine a transplant?? For $6,500 that sounds a little to cheap to me. Oh well. Life goes on.Dave & Terri ------------------ 66 Bench Coupe 65 289 "A" Code w/4 Speed IP: 152.163.204.11 |
