First of all, why are you shouting? lol

The 9 inch is used in big engine/high performance applications. The 8 is used mostly for six cylinders and small eights.

Tom, I think you meant '68, right? {last year for the 289} Or did you mean '78 was the last year for the 8 inch?

Steve...78 was the last year for the 8"...in Mustangs...an 80 V6 Pinto would be the last for an 8" in any NorthAmerican car.
the last 9" in cars would be the 80 Versailles ,the last 9" was in trucks and vans around 83 i think.

I have a 9" in my F100 and it came stock with the 240 I6. Is this because it's a truck?

Good info, Tom. I never realized car 9" rears stopped in 1980! Of course the Granada and Monarch still had the 9" option in 1980, while the Versailles had it standard (with discs).
The Granada/Monarch had the 9"/disc rearend as an option, I wonder how rare those cars are.. It was only availible with Hydroboost.

hmmm...i didn't know about the Comet wagon 289 stick one?...but then i dont think i have ever seen one anyways.

Granada's also had a drum brake 9" too, seems they are usually 2.47 gears. I have seen these with 200 straight 6's so it isnt for strength,351W Granadas often have the 8.5" rear (like an 8.8)...odd

The 9" was available in 1/2 ton trucks to 1986, with ratios up to 3.50 to 1! Both 2WD and 4x4.
