I've come to the conclusion that my finances will never allow me to get the mountain-pulling PowerStroke Diesel I crave. To that end, I've been looking at maybe buying an older F series truck if I found something I liked. Well, I need some opinions now! There are two trucks that have piqued my curiosity. One is a '90 F250 with a 460, 160K miles, power everything, extended cab, with an asking price of $4,800. The second one is a '94 F-150 XLT with a 5.0, extended cab, tow package, dual tanks, power everything, lumber rack, tool box, bed liner, with an asking price of $6,600. I have no idea how many miles are on the 5.0. I guess what I'm hoping for are some pro's and con's of each truck, along with a comparison and contrast of the 460 versus the 302. How does the 302 in the truck differ from my 1990 GT? Is it easy to work on? How about the 460? Easy to work on too? I need someone who knows these trucks to give me the lowdown. I'm just not real familiar with the older trucks. TIA! The 460 will get about 8 mpg max. the 5.0 almost double. I.E you will pay more to operate the one you really want.------------------ Lyle 69 rag top 7126cubic centimeters 93 explorer 98 f 150

The 5.0 will be just as easy to work on as your Mustang, easier, actually. For horsepower, I think you are looking at 230 hp for the 460 vs 195 for the 5.0. Of course the 460 will make gobs more torque, but as Lyle mentioned, it will really suck down the fuel. The F-250 will have tougher components, and coupled with the 460 will be a better towing rig. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 M code 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 open '72 Mustang Sprint Coupe 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Lok '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip '97 Probe GTS 2.5L DOHC My Photo Page Christmas shopping? What you will be doing with the truck will help in the decision. If all you will do is pull a car trailer or huge camper, you'll probably need the bigger truck. The 302 is fine for these jobs once in a while, but it will work harder. If you are just going out doing errands, get the economy size!

I've pretty much ruled out the 460. I never really wanted to consider it anyway, but figured since I didn't know anything about them, I should make sure they weren't a hot item, or worth their weight in gold first. Since I'd given up on my mountain-puller (the PowerStroke), I figured necessity will now rule instead of want & desire. That means either a 302 or a 351. How easy is it to mod the truck 5.0's? Are they pretty much the same as the Mustang ones, or are the computers different? Will I be able to put in an aftermarket cam made for the mustang 5.0's without any problems? Heads? Headers? Intake? Do they make aftermarket cat-forward exhaust systems? How about the tranny's? Are they reliable, or do they have inherent problems I need to look for? Thanks again guys. Anyone that knows ANYTHING about the truck 5.0's, please chime in! I'm checking the car out tomorrow! Stewart [This message has been edited by Stewart (edited 12-05-2001).]

Stewart, Speaking from experience: I had a 5.0 in a '90 F-150 and although I liked the truck, it was useless and ultimatly I had to sell it. The main problem, and one that may not concern you in Montery is that the truck had only single track rear ends; it was useless in snow or the steep mountains here. My friend Roger (bfxcomet) has a 460 '92 and besides it sucks gas and thus limits its use, is more expensive to maintain. I now have an awsome truck that if got wrecked, I would replace it with the same. I have a '97 F-150 extended cab 4X4 with limited slip front and rear. This truck goes anywhere! I added four new rear leafs and turned up the front torsion bars. I have 31 inch Duellers. It is a 4.6 litre and I have added a K&N filter and better exaust. I tow a 27' travel trailer and it does fine. It seats six adults comfortably. Again, your needs are most likely different than mine, but check out the used 97-99 prices. Let us know what you decide. stay away from that overpriced F-250...especially with that many miles on it!I have a 1990 5.0 f-150 4x4. It won't go half as far as either of my JEEPS will so if you want to go 'anywhere'...get a JEEP My truck is geared with 3:08s and makes it really really really REALLY slow. the truck has plenty of power but won't get out of the way of a street sweeper. I put on a K&N filtercharger and that helped some. It gets about 14 to 16 mpg. At 73K miles it hasn't had anything major go wrong but it seems to have busted every single coolant hose it has...those are a pain! I don't know what else to tell you other than that...let me know if you have any specific questions. ------------------ '73 drop top Stang - '90 Ford F-150 4x4 - '78 Ford F-150 '95 Mercury Cougar V8 -'83 Mercury Marquis '89 JEEP Cherokee - '79 JEEP Wagoneer '71 Scout 4x4 http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/convertiblesclub http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/jeepshotspot http://www.mild2wild.org

Stewart, you might want to keep your eyes open for a 5.8. Mine gets good gas mileage, and it moves pretty good, too. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 M code 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 open '72 Mustang Sprint Coupe 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Lok '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip '97 Probe GTS 2.5L DOHC My Photo Page Christmas shopping? Limited slip was optional in all years, as far as I know. Agreed all the way
But my F150 has the 5.0, AOD, and 3.55 rear end. Did very well towing the mustang or the boat(s) or the horse trailer and so on. It never let me down on snow or ice, but the Jeeps could always go farther. But the 5.8 would be a better motor for towing.

Well, I got a quick look at the truck tonight. Couldn't spend as much time with it as I wanted to, but I took it for a quick spin around the block. The engine sounds good, with no abnormal noises that I could detect. It is fully loaded (power everything except the seat) with a tow package, bed liner, metal tool box, and best of all...a brand new lumber rack. The interior is pretty clean, and the body is in good shape too, but the OD button on the end of the gear shift lever is broken. The acceleration seems pretty decent, the tires are less than 6 months old, and the suspension seems a bit spongy. That might be a misperception by me though because the Mustang has a very stiff suspension. Even my Crown Vic has an upgraded suspension (Eibach springs with Koni reds). I'm going to try and check the truck out during daylight hours this weekend. Stewart [This message has been edited by Stewart (edited 12-07-2001).]
