My Dad has a 1990 ford f-150 4x4 5.0 that has been resonbly good for the past 3 years we have owned it. The newest problem is from the motor. I have a K&N filtercharger for the intake on it and it normally has a nice muffled 5.0 sound to it with it. I haven't driven it in a few months and after drving it the other night it sounds like it has a box fan under the hood when you step on the gas. It just sounds really "windy" under the hood instead of the aggressive 5.0 growl it usually has. Of course Dad doesn't hear a thing...

It has 78K miles on it now and I am hoping this is an easy fix.

I would have to say the clutch fan is on it's way out. My 95 will do that noise once in a while, usually on very cold starts. I think the clutch is locking up a little too much,so the fan is really moving some air.

Is this the first time you've driven it since you installed the K&N? I've heard from people that they make "wooshing" or "sucking" noise. Just a suggestion.

I put a K&N filter in my truck, and it didn't sound any different,or give it any more power. In fact,I feel like I wasted $35.

I don't want to get this truned into a K&N post but I love the K&N and will always use them on my performance vehicles. I have owned four and put many thousands of miles on them in each of the vehicles they were on...even if you don't feel much performance...which you should feel a difference then you atleast are saving gas mileage and the montey to replace filters.

Mike...I know the intake on my f-150 was horribly restrictive...I would recommend checking all the routing and replacing all the small filters in there...or even better...just removing them. The K&N will take care of filtering and also that 5.0 or 5.8 will sound a lot better too.

As for my truck I will have to investigate the clutch in the fan. How much trouble are we talking to replace this fan?
