I just bought a 97 F150 4.6 What do I do to get a little more out of it? Nothing crazy just bolt on's ! Its not bad now! Its way better than my Ram was!! But more is better!!

P.S. Has anyone tried the hypertec power programmer 3 yet and if so where can I get one at a good price mail order?

I'm guessing the usual, T.B., headers maybe a chip. I hear headers are a pain in the @#% to install on the 4.6, or maybe just in mustangs, don't recall.

A Vortech is a bolt-on, right?

Those headers are shortys,so the exhaust system won't change at the engine.

The mod. motors are made to share a lot of parts right? The diff. from the mustang is prob. the heads, intake, exhaust man. etc.
Since it is a '97 it is prob an iron block.

Not sure about the Ford trucks, but I know my Crown Vic, which shares the same 4.6 modular engine block as the Mustangs aren't able to use the same bolt-ons. The cam is different, the heads are different, and the throttle body on the intake is on the opposite side as the Mustangs.

I can't even get headers for my car.

You'd think that Ford in their infinite wisdom would have made it so that Vic owners could use the same go-fast parts as the Mustang. I mean, there are those of us with Mustangs AND kids!

There is one solution to my problem though. Heh heh heh....it's called a Powerstroke F-250 super duty crew cab!! OH BAYBEE!

Room enough for the family, plus the versatility to be used as my work truck and haul Renee's horse whenever the need may arise.

Stewwie would be a happy man!

Seriously, I'd start on the breathing and my first mod would be a nice cat-back system, such as a Gibson or Pacesetter.

I agree with Steve on this one. Exhaust first. Then maybe check out a performance chip.

Thats kinda what I was thinking myself! I put a walker glass pack on my Ram and it sounded better than the gibson on a friends truck!! Also I had a K & N air filter But it didn;t seem to make a whole lot of difference. I was thinking about the Hypertech power programer 3. It seems like it would be very usefull in more than just power! And I was planing on pulling off the throttle body and cleaning it up a bit? Or replacing it with a bigger one?

My buddy put a Hyperchip on his car, and it went from 15.2s in the 1/4 to 15.4s. They gave him his money back, though.

I wouldn't put a larger throttle body on it until it needed it. {after cat-backs, headers, and a cam change, for example.}

Just how much do you plan on modifying it, anyway?

You would be wise to get an end goal in mind first, instead of just grabbing parts at random.

I'm not going to anything radical! In fact I'm pretty happy with it the way it is! So I might just put a K & N on it with a free flowing muffler and maybe the programer 3?
Only becouse you can change things like the rev.limiter and tire sizes. Also fuel changes.

This morning I over slept! So I needed to make up time!! Let me tell you it will do 99 real fast!! With no problem!

P.S. Steve I want to start using synthetic oil in this motor. What weight would you recommend for the no.east?

I don't know about synthetic, but I use 10w40 all the time.

The factory suggested oil for the 4.6 is 5W30, which is quite a bit lighter than even 10W30 as I accidently used once on another car I owned that used 5W30... and I was wondering why the car was so sluggish after the oil change!
I also have a '97 F150 4X4 with the 4.6 and so far have a K&N filter and I changed the exhaust from behind the cats to the rear with 2-1/2 tubing and a turbo muffler. The original exhaust was existed in front of the passenger rear tire so that rim was corroding! I actually notice a difference when I'm in big revs as the truck shifts at 5000 rpm from the factory. I only have 3:55 gears and I use 31" tall tires (and I lifted it too-what can I say,I'm Canadian eh) Apparently these 4.6 engines are prone to the intakes getting gunked up and needs to be cleaned with a system than hooks into the fuel line and the the truck runs for 45 minutes. My truck is detonating and apparently this is the problem. I towed our 27' travel trailer down to the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Yuma, Indio and Found that I lost a ton of power at high elevation and ran at 4000 rpm to maintain 100 Kph (60 mph) I know my gears sucked but we don't have elevation here like we saw in the Southwest. I spent about $3,200 in gas for that trip.

Update:
My '97 has been predetonating and a very bright mechanic I know said that the 4.6's are prone to carboningup and needs to be decarboned on a 'Sun 5000' machine for 45 min. Apparently the other machines that do this job do not do as good a job. -any mechanics offer their opinion, please?- Also apperently the Bosch spark plugs are a good choice and cheaper than Ford plugs. Apparently 100,000kph is too long for plug intervals and they are trashed.
