I have a 77 F150 that I will eventually use for parts on my 68, but for now it is my driver. I have an electrical drain on it. Last owner put new alternator and battery in it. I thought maybe the alternator was a bad reman, so I jumped started it, disconnected the battery and the truck stayed running, so I ruled out the alternator. Took it to Autozone and the alt, battery, and regulator all check out ok. So I bought a test light to start tracking down problems. I disconnected the positive cable put the ground clip on it then touched the positive terminal on the battery. Light goes on, so there is a drain. When I did this I heard a click. It is coming from the starter. Bad starter right? Next question...this may be obvious, but I want a second opinion(don't trust my own). Since I will be swapping the front discs to my 68, I want to be able to use the aftermarket wheels I bought for it. The 77 has 15" factory wheels so my 15" aluminum aftermarket wheels should fit ok right? Ok, last question...I have a 400M with the factory 2bl carb on the 77. It runs pretty good, but if I give it more than about half throttle, it bogs really bad. I'm helpless when it comes to carbs. Any suggestions?Sorry this post is so long, but when it rains, it pours, right?

68,I think your starter is ok. It is run by the relay,so there shouldn't be any power to it until you turn the key{or jump the relay}. It's either the relay,or the ignition switch. Are you sure the clicking isn't in the relay? I'd pull the lead to the starter and see if it has power when the key is off. If it does, you have a fault in one of the other components. Careful not to arc that one! No problems for your wheels going on! Sounds like a cruddy carb. It may be time for a rebuild. Try some carb&injector cleaner in the tank first, and a fuel filter. That's about the speed you start to notice problems with a dirty filter, which may be causing starvation.

Thanks Mike. The starter was bad. The starter itself was actually clicking. Took it to the shop and it tested bad so I changed it out. No more electrical gremlins I'm relieved about the wheels. Hate to have to get rid of them as they were kinda pricey. I thought about seeing what they look like on the 77, but that would be like polishing a turd. Although it would more than double the value of the truck. Hehehe. I sprayed a bunch of carb cleaner in the carb, didn't seem do make any difference. If the timing is off will it have the bogging symptom?

You could check it. There is an emissions sticker somewhere under the hood. Try setting it to that. You need to pull the vacuum hose on the advance and plug it to set the timing correct. It should be about 8*,I think. Most of the Clevelands run good at 10*.

68, I have a 351M in a 78 Bronco, so I thought I would reply in case you haven't fixed your carb "bog" yet.In case your emmissions sticker is gone, the stock timing is set to 4*, although the M's do run better with a tad more. The advice on changing the fuel filter is good. I changed mine recently and it was almost completely clogged! I also had a bog or flat spot in mine at partial throttle, and I changed out the distributor springs to weaker ones. This brought the advance on sooner and made the truck run much better. Luck. Don

Thanks for the tips guys. I don't have a timing light, so I've always done timing by ear. I could get my 302 running pretty good by ear, but I don't know about the 400. I'll check the fuel filter (didn't think about it,duh!) The engine still has the emissions sticker on it. It didn't come with cat converters. I thought all vehicles started using them by mid 70's.

68, cars did have cats by then, but the trucks were exempt until the 79 model year.On that bog issue, you might check the advance weights in the distributor. Sometimes they will get all rusted up and/or worn. This causes them to stick, and that may feel like the carb bogging, when it is actually the timing not advancing properly. If you still think it is the carb, you can pull the top off easily, (6 screws) and the float assembly is readily accessable. You can check the bowl for debris on the bottom that may be covering jets, etc.

I'm thinking it isn't getting the fuel. It sounds like it's still sucking air, but like it's not getting the fuel with it. It's driveable, but you just can't floor it, or it will fall on it's face. I don't really want to dump any more money in it, other than maintaining it because it will eventually just be a parts truck. I pulled the cap off and it looked pretty good. Last owner replaced plugs/wires/cap recently. I just have to get off my butt and really check it out. BTW, thanks and welcome to M&M TheLoneRangerXLT. What are the details on your truck?

Thanks for the welcome, 68. I have a 78 Bronco Ranger XLT, Trailer Special, 351M, 4 speed. I have just done minor mods; window tint, tach, 31" BFG's on 8" chromes, turbo muffler, etc., etc. These days, the Bronc only goes offroad when I pull it in the yard to wash it. Sometimes it sees a little snow in the winter, though. You've just gotta love these old Ford trucks! Don
