I have an '89 Town Car 5.0L EFI engine that has a 'soft' knocking on the right bank. No smoking, but a more pronounced ticking when revving the motor. I'm thinking a lifter is going on that side, making the pushrod loose and thus slapping against the rocker arms. Does this sound like a possibility? I'm thinking of replacing the lifters/cam/springs with a little more performance. I'm pretty sure I have roller rockers, but I don't think it's a roller cam in there as I have a non-HO firing order. Does anyone have experience with the non HO Speed Density EFI 5.0L's?

thanks in advance

That should be a rollter cam by '89 even though it is not a H.O. It kinda sounds like a lifter from what you describe, is it high milage, or one that has been grandpa'd around and never really run?? If you pull the intake and find alot of carbon and so fourth you may want to also drop then pan (I know it's a pain in the *** on them) to clean it out really good... Otherwise when you have the intake off you could knock some of the dirt loose then it goes into the oil pan, plugs the pick screen and all hell breaks loose..

But before you get too far into tearing it down you may want to check the injectors.. One of those nifty mechanic's stethoscopes works well for listening for them.. One in a whole one will get loud (usually a sign it is going bad)...

It has 80K on it and was really clean looking inside when I dropped it in. I regasketed the valve covers and forgot to look at the rockers more than to see that they were very clean, no muck.

Someone suggested that it might be a bent pushrod, thought I tend towards a lifter, as you said.

Pulled the cover: regular stamped rocker arms, not rollers. Three of the pushrods were majorly worn on the ends along with the rocker arm cup it seats into. I replaced them, along with squirting some Mystery Oil down to the lifter. It's really clean in there otherwise. Started here up and ticking stopped for now. I hope it'll hold out until I can save up for a new lifter/cam/spring setup. I saw a Comp Cams nonHO cam that is for computer controlled 5.0L's, sounds pretty good. I'm thinking I might try to convert to roller rockers with the conversion kit too. It'd be around $300+ for all that, and that's just the parts. It wouldn't need machine work, so that's a good thing...I'd do it myself.
