Finally got the Falcon out after a cold winter and a sloppy rainy early Spring, and took her out a few times last week.

Had a problem with it overheating with the standard factory 2 core radiator ...even though the previous owner had installed an auxillary electric fan on it. When I sat in traffic or pulled a big hill it would shoot up around 195-200 degrees...too much for my comfort with the 289.

So I put in a 3 core the other day that I ordered from NAPA (Modine) and also purchased a heavy duty 4" shroud...took care of the problem! Temp now stays between 165-170 without even using the electric fan. Feel a LOT better and cooler now!

Also had a slight miss in it at steady throttle, so I checked the points and the gap was set around .010 by the previous owner...reset them at .013 and it was like I gained 30 HP...no more miss and runs MUCH stronger.

Been thinking of putting in a Pertronix Igniter II...or a Crane Electronic one...any advice, experience, or preference? ...Sam

gunrocker,
Glad to hear you got it sorted out. The first thing that came to mind when I started reading your post was the shroud, but as I read on I realized you had it covered. I haven't had any personal experience with either electronic conversion, but I've heard of a few complaints about the Pertronix Ignitor, but none about the Crane XR-i.

Sam don't rule out getting a duraspark unit. About the same price as the other units your looking at.

64 Falcon...Been hearing good things about the Crane unit too, and a few problems with the Pertronix unit. I like the idea that the Crane unit you can just throw in the points with the backing plate if it ever goes out froma a problem.

Scoop...Tell me more about the Duraspark dizzy...difficult to hook up to a stock '65?
I'm really ignorant to those...since when I last raced dual point distributors were the high tech craze!

Read this,

That system for sell with the MSD 6a and coil and dist for $150 seems like a great and it should all work just fine.
