ok , id like to start off by saying hi, i am new to these forums. ok, now for the question. i have a 1968 cougar with a 302 , and the shock tower is cracked. i can buy two shock towers from a 1969 cougar that had a 351 in it, i was wondering if it would work in my 68 cougar.i would also like to know how much you guys think a shop would charge to install the new one (if it works) thank you all

Hello and welcome!Have you thought of just repairing the shock towers you have now? Shock tower cracking is a common problem with Mustangs '65-'70 and Cougars '67-'70. A common repair in to install a Boss 302/big block reinforcement kit. I just did this in my '70 Mach 1 and the shock towers are stiffer now than when they were new. cool , thanks alot steve. but, my drivers side shock tower is cracked the size of the grand canyon, and the other side is cracked very small, and can be welded and resupported. but i am going to have to replace the drivers side shock tower, and was still wondering is the 69 shock tower for a 351 car would be the same as a 68 shock tower for a 302 car. and if it doesnt work i will repair it the same way you did steve. thanks for the help, btw, nice weld jobs on your 70 mach 1 "Did you use a export brace or monte carlo bar to hold the towers in place while you're welding?" when i reinstall my shock towers is this something i should look into doing?

Ok. I'm pretty sure the shock towers are not the same. The reason I say this is because NPD sells reproduction shock towers for the Mustang, which is virtually identical to the Cougar and they list different part numbers for the '67-'68 and the '69-'70. Yes, if I were doing that repair again, I'd definitely bolt the export brace and the Monte Carlo bar in place. I lucked out this time, but you can never be too precise. ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip

well,i guess it was to goood to be true. i talked to the guys at npd and they said the 69 shock tower will absoultly not work at all. thank you for your replies steve. i appreciate the help a lot. now to just find a sixty eight shocktower, o yeah, if i can ill post a pic of my cracked one so you can see what i mean by cracked the size of the grand canyon, i highly doubt it can be welded back together

But NPD does sell '68 Mustang shock towers, which you can use.I don't know what your towers look like, but mine were pretty cracked and hatcheted before we got to them. I have 100% confidence in them now. {Plus I still have the right VIN on the car.} ------------------ '70 Mustang Mach 1 351C 4V/FMX/3.25 Open '70 Mustang Convertible 250 I6/3 speed/2.79 Open '72 Mustang Sprint Hardtop 351C 4V/FMX/4.30 Trac Loc '94 F-150 XL 5.8L/E4OD/3.55 Limited Slip
