After receiving the good news that the 94's problem was not my transmission and running premium gas to get rid of the spark knock, I thought all was well.... But, the last couple of days that shimmer was back and stronger than ever. I took it in this a.m. to a transmission shop not far from my office.

I can take it in on Monday and they'll have it ready for me that evening. At least it's not as costly as a transmission......but this could prevent me from going to Atlanta....

yup....expensive car repair......sure could......

Geez, I hope this is the last thing that comes up with that car!! Otherwise, I might just have to become a "classic" only owner. I just think of all that I've put into it already and I could have the Fairlane on the road and the SheStang lookin' fine!!!

Sorry to hear of your problem, hope it doesn't end up costing you too much, but tranny repairs can get expensive real quick. Hope after this the problems will be over. Good luck -

I hope so too, Joe. Otherwise I'll have to change her name from "QueenBee" to "Lemon"

I know your going to be stuck for some big $$$$ repairs but here's a suggestion once you've got things fixed - did you ever think about running synthetic ATF? My experience has been that the tranny will run cooler, will be better lubricated, and will result in smoother shifts. To boot you'll get better mileage and you can leave it in about 3 times as long as conventional ATF. It's more expensive, but since you can leave it in longer, it all evens out in the end.

I know there's been alot of banter on M&M pro and con about synthetics but if you've monitored things you'll know I'm a big synthetic supporter and a big fan of Amsoil products. My '93 Taurus Wagon has 84,000 plus on it and to date I've beaten the Ford AOD tranny hex that most Tauruses normally experience at around the 60,000 mark.

If you're interested, take a look at www.amsoil.com You can become a preferred customer, which is about $10.00 I believe, and that allows you to buy the product at dealer cost. You can order on a credit card and UPS will deliver to your door in about 5-7 days. You easily make up the $10.00 with the savings you are able to garner with the lower product cost. If your tranny is like the one on the Taurus, it takes about 10 quarts, a few more if you need to fill the torque converter as well.

So no one gets the wrong idea, I'm strictly a user of the product, not a seller, so there's no alterior motives here. Just trying to offer some ideas to ensure the tranny will work better and last longer once its fixed.

Good luck Ked....

O.K., guys, this is the deal. I took the 'vert into a different shop today that was recommended to me by a co-worker. When I had called him on Friday he had quoted me a much lower price to replace the torque converter. So, after my class I took the car in. He drove it and, of course, it shuddered not one time!!!! When he returned to his shop he started asking about the maintenence on the car, and I told him as far oil changes, coolant flushes, etc. the car is maintained. Ya'll ever hear that these cars need to have the transmission fluid flushed and replaced with new fluid every so often???? I thought I had all my bases covered!! I did not know this and today was the first time I had heard of this. So, this guy recommended that we try this procedure and he also had a tube of some "stuff" for the shudder. He told me that it was made for this problem. At a fraction of the cost of what it was going to be to replace the torque converter, we're going to try this. He also gave us the guarantee that if this does not work, then he will take off half the cost of this job to go towards a new torque converter.......... It kinda burns me up that the guy at the first shop was ready to jump right on a high dollar job without giving me any options!!

The norm as I've been told is you should change the ATF and transmission filter every 2 years or 30,000, whichever comes first. That interval can be extended out to about 6 years or 100,000 with synthetic fluid.

Hope the magic goop works for you but if not, at least the shop will cut you a break on the torque converter later if you end up needing it.
