Living in Sacramento can get pretty hot and it seems to be giving my 96' GT some trouble. If the temp is less than 95 degress the temp gauge runs about 1/2. If over 95 runs slightly over 3/4. Doesn't matter if I'm idleing in traffic, doing 65+ on the freeway or A/C on or off. I don't have a temp gauge marked in degrees so can't help there. The fan does appear to be running.Any ideas on what the problem might be?

Here's what the Hayne's Manual says to check for overheating condition:1) Insufficient coolant in system 2) Drivebelt defective or not adjusted properly 3) Radiator Core blocked or radiator grille dirty and restricted 4) Thermostat faulty 5) Cooling fan not functioning properly 6) Radiator cap not maintaining proper pressure 7) Ignition timing incorrect 8) Defective water pump 9) Improper grade of engine oil 10) Inaccurate temp gauge Sounds like the system is keeping you out of the RED area, just has to work hard when it is really hot outside. The cooling fan is set to come on at a certain temp 221F I think. It turns off when it goes below 200. You can reprogram it to come on at a lower temp or hard wire a switch so that you can turn the fan on manually. You can also try running a lower temp thermostat so that the engine stays cooler. I've never had a problem with running hot in my 71, 94 or 01, however, my old 94 Z28 would run HOT during the summer months here in Atlanta. I wired a switch to the relays so that I could turn the fans on high anytime I wanted and leave them on. Sure made a heck of a difference during the bumper-to-bumper commutes in the 100 degree weather. Just some food for thought. Let us know what you find. Mike

I was wondering the same thing about mine. I have a 96 GT, I am stationed in germany and the weather never gets close to a 100. Still my GT runs past the halfway point on the gauge all the time, no matter the driving conditions. I had the local German Ford dealer tell me that the Modular motors like to run hotter, that it is okay. I dont know I am a little skeptical. Like I said it doesnt matter if I am doing 140 mph for 3 hours straight, or driving 30 mph for 10 minutes, always hot!

Hope this post will be allowed, so here goes. There is a product, called MotorMax, that is absolutely fantastic. Been around commercially for a while, but just now being introduced to the public. Used by A. J. Foyt, (Team Conseco), Mobil, (yes, Mobil). TrackSide Magazine says, "This product is all it claims to be." And, yes, I am a distributor for the product, but only because it took my personal vehicle from 210, to 185 deg, and made my A/C ice cold! Totally non-toxic, totally compatible with all coolant components and anti-freezes, etc. 100% money back guarantee. Sells for $31.95 delivered to you. E-mail me for more info. Don K K and D PowerPerformance Rev it with SpiralMax Cool it with MotorMax Protect it with Pro-Tec

Unless your engine gets so hot that it causes the AC compressor to bypass, engine temp has absolutely no effect on AC performance. My recommendation for your overheating problem would be to install a 180* thermostat. I did on my 93 and it's made a huge difference. On the trip to Reno the needle never got higher than "4 o'clock" on the gauge, even with temperatures near 100 and climbing over 8,000 feet twice. Dave
