My son headed back to college Sunday and made it about 30 Miles down I-95. He called and said he had smoke comming from the vents. Got him turned around and went to lookat the car. It was of course a leak in the heater core. We by-passed the heater to get him on the road but I will have to get it fixed right shortly. I have replaced many of them on the 65-70 cars but never one of these. Its an 87Gt with AC and power everything. Anyone done this and can offer any tips.------------------ Scott Akom 65 Coupe (Modified) 68 Coupe (Son's) 2000 GT Conv. (Wifes) 1987 GT Conv. I've done it. It's a real pain in the can too. Where does your son go to school? Anyway....the heater core is on the pass side of the car behind the dash. you will have to remove the ENTIRE dash board to replace this thing. If you have AC you might end up having to dissconnect the lines, though I think I *might* be able to get it w/o removeing the evap. Basically, if you look under the dash you'll see a large black box behind the dash. The heater core is inside of that box on the top. You'll need to remove the center console, gauge pod, and dash before you can gain access to the box. Even then it tends to sit under the cowl a little bit so I ended up pulling my ac lines off and yanking the box backwards to get to the core. It will take you a good day to do this, but it beats paying the 300 plus dollars to have it done.------------------ -FISHTAIL 92GT "The Ghetto Sled" CMPS major @ University of MD college park Best ET/MPH thus far: 14.40/100.67mph....damn wheel spin. Thanks for the input fishtail. That is sort of what I was afraid of by looking quickly at it. I hate digging around under dashes etc. He goes to a small D3 college in Fayetteville NC called Methodist College. He plays soccer for them. I hope he doesnt need heat until Thanksgiving as I believe that is the next time he will be able to make it home. Thanks again for the input------------------ Scott Akom 65 Coupe (Modified) 68 Coupe (Son's) 2000 GT Conv. (Wifes) 1987 GT Conv. Thanksgiving? ouch! lol, I have my heat on already! Methodist eh? I've heard of that school before, I think my sis has some friends that attend school there. In fact, I think my friend carly goes there...but I can't ever keep everyones schools straight. It drives me crazy. If you guys get stuck when your ripping that baby apart and need help, let me know...I'm not that far from richmond.------------------ -FISHTAIL 92GT "The Ghetto Sled" CMPS major @ University of MD college park Best ET/MPH thus far: 14.40/100.67mph....damn wheel spin. hey wicked it is a little bit annoying but go ahead and plan on evuacting the ac lines and u dont have to pull the dash out of the car just take the whole thing loose except the wiring and lay it back some on the pass side ive done 3 and the last one includinding bending the ac lines to clear a 460 it only took me 1 1/2 hours but expect he first one to take bout 3-4 hours so good luck ------------------ Josh 67 coupe with 351c 94 Explorer 30 model A currently rustbucket in process 67 convt with efi 5.0 and t5

67, how did you have enough room to work with the dash just pulled back? on my 88 the top of the box where the core was sat like 1/2" under the cowl behind the window...I didn't have enough room to get to it w/o removing the dash in order to give myself room to pry. If there is some simple trick I'm missing I'd love to know bc I'm waiting for the one on this 92 to go south....------------------ -FISHTAIL 92GT "The Ghetto Sled" CMPS major @ University of MD college park Best ET/MPH thus far: 14.40/100.67mph....damn wheel spin. Thanks for the input guys. I had hoped there was some sort of trick to avoid having to discharge the AC. Working under dashes is not my most favorite things to do. Not as young as I used to be. Maybe I will just pop the top on a brown beverage and supervise young son as learns a new vocabulary.------------------ Scott Akom 65 Coupe (Modified) 68 Coupe (Son's) 2000 GT Conv. Well I think I am gonna take the '88 out of service sometime this week and start on the heater core . I have too much to do to dedicate a whole day so I'll just start tearing into it, thats the nice thing about owning two cars . If I get really stupid I may document the whole thing with digital pics, but dont bet on it .------------------ Tim M&M Member #35 1965 Mustang coupe, 200 I6, Holley 2300, Clifford header, true duals w/ 26" Smithys 1988 Mustang GT AOD vert, 15.810 @ 88.871 mph 100% stock w/ no traction 1976 Silverline Comoro 18' trihull ski boat, 188 hp 302 I/O, another toy http://all.at/mustang https://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/I65Stang.html

Tim, I would appreciate it if you keep me updated on the progress and any tips that might make it go better. My son Brian goes to school about 3 hours away so we will need to get it done over a weekend when he gets a chance to come home. It will probably be no sooner than the first of November as he will have soccer games going on until at least then.------------------ Scott Akom 65 Coupe (Modified) 68 Coupe (Son's) 2000 GT Conv. I replaced mine on my capri with a/c and it wasn't too bad. Pull the glove box and you can do it without pulling the entire dash. don't be afraid to pull on some plastic. I didn't put one of the three support bolts back in that hold up the core, but that was 3 years ago and it's still fine. There are a few hidden bolts that you do have to feel for up in the housing for the core though.
