Left rear is now buzzing on the traffic report. Mine is a '93GT Convertible. Any consensus on speakers here. Aren't the ones I need like 6x8 or something strange like that? Anyone replace theirs? Need some advice, and where you got them would be nice too. Thanks! Dave

Dave, are you looking to replace the rear speakers with stock replacements, or are you looking to upgrade? If you plan on upgrading, how far do you want to go? For the sake of this response, I'm going to conclude that you want to replace both speakers with something nice (OEM grade or a step up) without breaking the bank.According to the Crutchfield catalogue I have, the rear speaker size for the '93 'verts are 5 X 7 or 6 1/2", with a depth of 2 5/8". There are a variety of speaker brands available, from Blaupunkt to Kenwood to Pioneer to Cerwin-Vega to JBL to Infinity to Polk, etc. It all comes down to the type of sound quality you want to have in your car. Personally, I'd love to drop two-grand into a sound system for Renee's GT. But earlier this year I settled for an 8" bazooka tube, to go along with the factory speakers. Crutchfield has speakers from $50 dollars to $150 dollars. It all depends on what you want. http://www.crutchfield.com Stewart

Thanks, Stewart!I'm looking for an upgrade, but nothing that severe. Pioneers, Kenwoods, etc. Cerwin Vegas would be nice. I don't really care for those bazooka tubes. I like bass, but clean bass. I swore that at one point I had looked up the speaker size at Sears, and they showed them as 6x8's. Hmmmm....

I just ordered the Kenwood 1687's. They seemed to have the best specs. Crutchfield wanted $99 +shipping for them. I did a web search and found them for $65 including shipping. Gotta love the Internet!! Thanks for the help Stewart!

Sounds like you got a great deal!As for the size of the speakers, the hatchbacks are 6 X 8, but the 'verts were listed as a different size. I can only hope that Crutchfield is accurate. Stewart

I was surprised at how clear and clean the bass produced by the tube was. But then again, I bought the tube from my buddy who used to install car audio equipment, and he had ripped out the 8" Bazooka woofer and replaced it with a better speaker. Stewart

Hmmm.......I just replaced my ENTIRE stereo dude. I gave all my infinity speakers to my friend pat to use in his 93 vert. 6X8's fit, but not as nicely as the 5X7's do. If you want to hear the stuff I got, again, let me know. I got clarion plates for the rear, infinity components for the doors, and DEI's for the dash. It sounds SUPER clean, and the bass is nice but not too loud. I REALLY like the clarion plates, and I have heard several people really praise the regular infinity referance series stuff. I orginally got all infinity stuff, but the 5X7's wouldn't fit in my 92 bc of the seatbelt mounting points. You have more room in a vert, so they should fit in your car w/o any trouble. Again, if you have questions with this stuff, it's installation, bass blockers, and or how to set everything up, let me know. I do this stuff all the time. btw, which model kenwood stuff did you get? The exelon stuff, or the regular kenwood? Picking speakers is a huge pain, and it took me weeks to decide what I wanted. I ended up spending more than I planned, but I'm really pleased with the results. I still have some tweaking to do with gain control issues on my rockford driving the speaks, but that's pretty much it.------------------ -FISHTAIL 92GT "The Ghetto Sled" CMPS major @ University of MD college park Best ET/MPH thus far: 14.40/100.67mph....damn wheel spin. Well I got the Kenwoods. They were NOT a stock replacement. Crutchfield is wrong there. They are definitely ovals coming out vice the 6.5" circles I bought. However: Have drill, will ream.Took me a while, but I got them in there. Nice stuff, I am happy. There's all kinds of room back there, I could have put 6x9's in there, I think (with some effort). Mike, I don't know the answer to your question about Exelon. I'm assuming they're just regular Kenwood stuff. I pulled up about 10 different models from Crutchfield that they said would fit, and picked the one with the best specs. Then I bought them somewhere else and saved almost 50%. I'm not that much of an officianado, so I wasn't looking for super high $$ stuff. I don't have to listen to torn speakers, so I'm happy!!

I knew the stock speakers were ovals, but yer saying the "alternate" 6 1/2" rounds Crutchfield lists in the catalogue aren't truly a stock alternate? Yuck! What did you have to trim in order to get the speakers to fit? I've been leaning towards some nice plate speakers for the back, but they're too expensive. Especially since the back speakers will only used for fill. I plan on setting up the sound system to produce more of a "concert stage" sound. In other words, the sound will be come from the front center of the car, as opposed to behind the driver. I'm thinking of maybe even just disconnecting the rear speakers when I get the cash to do the audio system. Stewart

Which plates were you looking at stew? I got the clarion set. They are increadbly clear, and while the rear is something I would normally use for fill as well, they were some of the only speakers I could find that would fit. I have to replace my head unit still bc I"M getting feedback from the rear set of RCA's off of it(I think I cooked it, long story though). In any case, I"m glad I spent the extra money on the rear speakers. While the concert stage setup is great when your putting around town, or driving with the windows up, it becomes a little weak when you start window down crusing. I've found that the extra volume from the rear can be really helpful here, hence you wouldn't want cruddy rear speakers muddying up your soundstage. At around 65-70 when my car is quite loud inside I can still hear my stereo really well if I want too, and it's very clean sound. If you really want to drop the cash on a sound system, I would by a pretty decient(but not top end) pair of rear speakers to use mainly for fill sound in the midbass-mid range area. Then when you get into the window down, stereo blareing mode you can turn off the FIE control(pioneer radio option that I love ) and get the extra volume when you want it. Alternately, if you did spend a rack of cash on some very nice 3 way compenents from focal or something to put in the front, you probably wouldn't need much more than your subs in the rear anyway. There are alot of options when it comes to stereo setups, basically it will always boil down to personal taste, budget and music style. ------------------ -FISHTAIL 92GT "The Ghetto Sled" CMPS major @ University of MD college park Best ET/MPH thus far: 14.40/100.67mph....damn wheel spin. Exactly! I started getting a headache when I was researching my options...so I stopped! Especially since I didn't have the cash to spend on the stuff anyway!! As for the plate speakers I was contemplating, there was a set of Boston Acoustics that I REALLY liked. Very clear mids and mid-bass. Stewart

Ok, you've got me there...I didn't know boston acustics made car audio stuff. Where did you find those? i have BA speakers on my puter, and they sound pretty good. You wouldn't be able to send me a link to them would you??------------------ -FISHTAIL 92GT "The Ghetto Sled" CMPS major @ University of MD college park Best ET/MPH thus far: 14.40/100.67mph....damn wheel spin. Actually, to my knowledge they don't make plate speakers anymore. The model I was thinking about purchasing was discontinued, and the salesman at Marina Auto Stereo said they won't be making any more. I don't know if they stopped making car audio speakers entirely, or if they only stopped making the plate speakers. Either way, I wish I had the cash at the time because they sounded really fantastic. They were expensive though. I had a buddy with a T-Bird a number of years ago that had only BA speakers in the car. Sounded really good too. It's possible they stopped making car audio speakers all together. Stewart
