I have a question regarding the plastic door-jamb plate. On my 1990, there is a scratch that starts just to the side of this plate and goes underneath it for about 1/2 inch. The scratch has some surface rust happening and I would like to get at it to neutralize and paint over it with touch-up.

My question is how do I get the sticker out of the way without removing it? I had thought about using a heat gun to soften up the adhesive so that I could carefully pull it back just enought to work on the scratch, do the repairs and then stick it back down. In doing so, I am hopeful that the original adhesive will still be sticky enough to readhere it to the door-jamb.

What do you folks think? Any thoughts you may have would be appreciated.

Steve, are you talking about the clear adhesive on the jamb plate located on the drivers side door? If so, I bet a heat gun would deform the clear adhesive, and probably ruin the info plate.

Is there any way you could tape the plate off and then work on the scratch?

If not, how about taking a razor (exacto blade comes to mind) and cutting along the border where the plate ends and the adhesive makes contact with the door jamb. Remove the cut out plate, as well as the remaing adhesive. Work on the paint as you like, then with some new adhesive, re-attach the info plate.

Those are the first idea's that come to mind.

Thanks for the ideas, Stewart. I wish it was as simple as masking off the plate and fixing the scratch, but the scratch runs right under the edge of it. I have to somehow pull the sticker back (just a little) to work on the scratch.

Do you think I can pull it back a little bit without it tearing or stretching?

You know, I would think not. I've found that only plastic adhesives that are meant to be removed, repositioned, and re-attached would work the way you're hoping. I could very well be wrong, but it's been my experience that plastic adhesives like the one on the door jamb, would distort and become wavy on that bottom edge. It may be something you could live with, I dunno. But in my opinion, it won't hold it's original shape.

I would bet it will be destroyed when you remove it.

Kevin Marti should be able to make you a new one. He just made one for my Mach 1 for $27 and it looks excellent.

Thanks, guys. I guess I can always try cutting it and if it does get wrecked, go to Marti. How do you go about ordering one from him, Steve? Does he need all of the info off the old one, or does he just go from the vin?

I'd check with him first, but I believe all he needs is your VIN.

Thanks. I think I'll try a little light surgery with an X-acto knife, and then see how it all turns out. I've got to fix the rust before it gets past the surface stage, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that I don't need to replace the plate.
