My son's 87 GT has developed a problem. It got hot on Sunday and there was no water in the radiator. It never overheated just ran hot. We fill it with water yet it seems to lose a quart or so a day depending on how far it is driven. No visable coolent on the ground were he parks. No coolent in the oil.
The engine runs great, no white smoke that we have seen, at least on startup. I havnt followed behind him to look at speed. We havnt checked the plugs yet but I would think you could see white smoke if the engine was burning the coolent. Any suggestions.

Check the little coolant bypass hose. That's the little elbow hose that goes from the thermostat housing to the intake manifold. Mine only leaked under pressure and I never did see anything on the ground. What didn't release as steam ended up on top of the water pump.

Just a thought.

Top of the engine and water pum are all clean
with no coolent spill visable. Yesterday when I checked the engine there was a damp place on the balancer as you looked sort of under the water pump. This morning everything was dry. I sure hope its something simple as he is supposed to take it back to college next week.

I think we found it. It finally showed up after driving around yesterday afternoon. The water pump is leaking out of a small hole on the underside. Only does it sometimes and then just trickles out and runs down the underside odf the bottom hose.
I guess it does it while driving and not sitting. Anyway we got it now.

that means your pump is going bad. replace it before you get stranded out on the road.
good luck

New Pump and hoses going on this afternoon.
My real fear was that there was a blown head gasket or intake gasket and we would be really pushed to get things changed before he goes back to college next week.
