I've got a line on an '86 GT 5.0 w/ 5 speed that I may buy to swap the engine and tranny into my 67 Coupe. However, I've read this is not a good engine to use but details as to why are scarce. Something about valve to pistion clearance being an issue was about all I could dig up so far. Can anyone elaborate on this? Second question. This is a California car. Will it be a Mass Air or Speed Density setup?

The '87-93 is definitely a better canidate than the '86. The '86 has an intake flows slightly less than the '87+. The heads are also E6 ummm, what are they called, High Swirl or Turbo Swirl or something heads which arent as good as the E7's. The pistons are also not flycut (for valve clearance) so to use a different cam and heads you have to either flycut the pistons or replace the pistons all together. There are some cams and heads you can run with stock pistons but you have to be very careful and check piston-valve clearance. If you are looking at doing a rebuild first the '86 will work as you can easily put in flycut pistons and get used stock '87+ intake and heads (E7s) cheapily (or you can upgrade :>). It is speed density, first year for mass air in California was '88.

I had an 86 GT and I now have a 92 LX. I liked the 86 GT better. In stock condition there wasn't much performance difference that you cold tell without a stop watch. The 86 had better thottle responce and better gas mileage. IF you going to keep the engine stock there's no reason to not use the 86 engine complete. Replacing the intake with a later one will help. Unless you are going to modify the engine keep the Speed Density system. The cylinder heads on these engines are the same as what Ford used on its Crown Vics & Town Cars up through when they went to the 4.6 OHC V8. In 86 the engines were very similar, only the cam, throttle body, pistons, and headers made the GT different.

Personally if I found an 86gt I would be building/restoring it, not parting it out. This is a very odd year in the stang family. it is the only "four eye" stang that is fuel injected. It is the frist year for FI. It is the last year of that interior. A lot of things for that year only type thing. Unless the car is trashed beyond repair think about doing something with it. I know I would by it if I had the time, money, space for it right now.
