What should the oil pressure gauge be reading in my 89 5.0? I'm getting some inconsistent readings.

Mine oil pressure guage doesn't have numbers but it reads in the middle of the range to about 2/3 when crusing and no lower then 1/3 of the range at idle. This is with 5W-30W synthtic oil. I will be changing to 10W-30 for the summer very soon. ------------------ 93 Cobra 'R' #58

My gauge is the same as yours. Most of the time it's right at the halfway mark. Others it's just below, but not necessarily at idle. With the automatic overdrive and the motor running at fairly low RPM at cruising speed, would that knock the oil pressure down a bit?

My '93 with AOD runs at about 2/3rds at idle, and possibly as low as a 1/2 at load. I don't think it's ever dropped below 1/2 though, unless it is low on oil.

quick note, throw a mechanical gauge on it. stock gauge isn't too reliable... i think they are for looks only.... it is nice to have 10lbs for each 1000 rpms.

10 Lbs for each 1000 rpms??? I dont think so. That would mean 60 lbs at 6000 rpm and thats about the end for a 5.0 motor stock. Im sure you mean something else by what you are saying. My car at Idle, is at 50-60lbs. Until the oil gets hot, then its about 35-40 which is good for a race motor with lightweight racing synthetic oil. Stock oil pressure should be the same unless you have a High Volume pump stuck in the motor. Then it will be a tad higher. On your electric guage in the car, if the guage moves, you have oil pressure. Period. The higher you rev the motor, the higher it should go up to a point. If you rev it up and the guage doesnt move at all, listen for noises, and check your connection on the Oil pressure sending unit.Tony
