I am installing a rebuilt 351c in my 77 ranchero, which had a 351m eingine. I have all the brakets for the cleveland and motor mounts, does anyone see any problem with the c4 bellhousing or the torque converter from the (m) motor being used in the new setup? Seems I'm having a little trouble getting the bellhousing to bolt up on the driver side bolts as the two top and two passanger side bolts tighten up. Also is the starter the same for both motors, I checked at the local parts store and they show the same parts number the cleveland is a 71, the mod is a 77. thanks

The trans WILL NOT bolt up. The M trans is a big block bolt pattern and the C is a small block bolt pattern. You need a small block trans.

You're ok with the starter, but clevelandstyle is right about the bellhousing.------------------

thanks guys, I already solved that problem with a small block bolt pattern bellhousing. My 351m cam with a c4 with the large bolt bellhousing.. wonder why i'm having such a hard time getting the block and bellhousing to meet... oh well I'll be on it in the morning...

You may need a starter for the cleveland also. Some of the 351m/400 has a hole in the starter that is threaded. The small block starter doesn't.Make sure the convertor is fully seated in the pump and the convertor studs & the TC DRAIN PLUG are aligned. You may have the wrong flex plate/convertor combo. That is the diameter of the converter studs are not the same diameter of the felxplate holes. just my 2 cents is all....do i get any change?...lol [This message has been edited by Just Strokin (edited 12-21-2001).]

Did you feel three clicks when you spun the torque convertor on the front pump? That's the usual reason the block and bellhousing don't mate. The convertor must engage with three different things as it mounts. You need to spin it and hear three clicks as you push it in. Be careful, if it's wrong and you start the engine you'll probably ruin your tranny's front pump. ------------------

Thanks guys, here are some things I found out. I have the motor, trans bolted together. the starter needs to be for a cleveland because the bolt pattern on the c6 use one bolt in the bellhousing and one bolt into the starter, where the c4 both bolt to the bellhousing. Yes you need either headers or the exhaust manifold off the Cleveland if you don't want to spend $150 + for a small starter. I picked up a pair of Cleveland manifolds at the junk yard yesterday, although the passanger side one has a gaping hole in it. Will have it welded today should have the motor turning over today.Lesson learned, A (m) and (C) motors are too different to think that you swap parts, and have an easy time of getting everything to work. Although it has been some fun. I rediscoved a whole vocabulary that I had forgotten...... Thanks all
