I have a '68 Shelby when started shows the battery discharging. The alternator light is on and ammeter shows discharging. If you bring it off idle to about 1500 rpm, it will start charging and the light will go off. You can then let it return to idle and it will still charge. Turn it off and start it again, it will show a discharge until you bring up the rpm. I have replaced the alternator and the voltage regulator and it still does the same thing. Any ideas?

Is this a stock autolite alternator? What is your idle speed?

They were either Autolite or Motorcraft. I had two and sent both to an alternator shop and they both checked fine. I also have tried two different voltage regulators. It probably idles at about 600 to 750 rpm.
