I have just aquired my mothers first car. It is a 78 Mustang II Cobra, 2.8 liter V6 with an automatic . I have recently started resurecting it. A week ago I was able to start it for the first time in 15 years .
So we took it off the jackstands to take a victoy lap, but when it got its full weight the front end totaly colapsed .
So I need help finding OEM or NOS suspention peices, plus a 2v carb for it. I have checked the junk yards near me to no avail.
Please Help!

Aaron

I rebuilt my whole suspension system. I found everything for the car at Canadian Tire. I would check pep boys, autozone or one of the big American chain stores. The Grey haired street rodders use Mustang front suspenshion in many of their hot rods.(model A's etc.) This has made Mustang II front suspension parts easy to find. I would rebuid the Carb. Buy a rebuild kit from a auto parts store and dig in. The kits come with really good, really easy instructions. All you need is a coulpe of hours and a clean working area. I have rebuilt the carb once allready, it still dies when it drops bellow 2grand.
The people at autozone and pepboys say that it needs to be replaced. Are they feeding me a load of $#%&, or is this true? What could the problem be? Thank you for the help!

Aaron,

First, please define 'totaly colapsed'. Got pictures? To me 'total colapse' means things ripped apart.

Second, if you do need a new carb check out a Holley 2 bbl Ford replacement. The replacement carb has a side hung float, factory placement of the fuel inlet and can use stock fuel filters. OTOH, you could go to a 'recycler' and get a carb that hasn't sat so long.

Third, check/ adjust the valve train, I have nightmare pictures of a V6 with years of neglect. Not Pretty.

Forgot to mention, if the frames healthy you may want to start asking about the small block installation now.

By totaly collapsed I mean: We have snaped and cracked A arms, broken spring seats, and a bent crossmember and rack! It is pretty bad! The oil pan is cracked and sitting on driveway. The valves and things have been all checked and set; and the timing was set using a carb from a manual car. As for the small block transplant, Mother won,t allow ,
unfortunatly because I had big plans for it(Paxton,Offy 4v intake, locker rear end, 10:1 pistons ect....).

I have serious reservations about the structural integrity of the car. Can you post pics somewhere of it?

As to dying under 2K...I assume you have ruled out gross vacuum leaks?

Sounds like a candidate for a Fatman (sic) front suspension, assuming the rest of the structure is ok which I hate to say is unlikely.

Pictures would help.

Dude...you have got to post some pictures of what that looks like!!!! What the hell happpened??? I can't even begin to imagine how that would start to develop...especially after sitting so long up on jack stands. The a-arms are pretty stout. E-bay has suspension parts for the II quite regularly. In fact, I'm about to list some on there w/in the next couple of months...depending on how my front end rebuild goes. Seriously, get us some pictures please!!!!!

Yeah, I'm kinda curious myself...especially if the car was in Texas it's whole life. If it were in New England for a good part of it's life, that would be a different story. But Texas....

I have a parts II with holes in the frame I can put a fist in and it hasn't fallen to the ground, so I'm really really curious.

Some of the rustiest cars I've looked at were from the gulf coast. Salt air does wonders for old cars.

Sorry been sick and not able to post any thing. Sorry no digital camera or scaner so pics arn't possible, sorry! The car spent the first part of its life in Pensylvania and Maryland so it is pretty rusty. We found new crossmember and have already installed it, and have diasasembled the whole front end for repairs. Also I have another question. Does anyone besides 3M produce the 78' Cobra II decals? They want about $350 for them! Thanks for all the help!

Actually, $350 is a good price for the '78 kit. I don't think 3M actually produces them, but they may be on 3M material.
