I am running an 83 (I think) 2300 that has started to dump a bit of white smoke out the exhaust at random times following an extended idle upon acceleration. Any hints as to where I should start looking?
Thanks any advice.

White smoke is usually indicative of a cooling system trouble. Check hoses...check gaskets (probably some coolant getting into the cylinder head)...

I have not had to much experience with these 2300 type engines, most of my work has been with the V-8s. It is a learning curve that has been a bit trying. As far as I can tell this engine has been tweaked a bit. Externally it has steel headers, some type of custom intake manifold and a Holley 350CFM 2BBL carb, MSD ignition system. I don't know about any of the inside specs.

I have a few basic style questions if they can be answered. First, I have seen a few performance sites on the web such as www.raceeng.com and www.racerwalsh.com are there any others?
Second, are there any good performance books on the 2.3 series engines that could be recommended?
Finally, what about turbos, are they worth the effort to install as to reliability. If so is it best to go aftermaket somewher of try to find one of the Ford style turbo coupes and salvage?

At any rate thanks for any assistance on this project.

You might try Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords.
They ran a series of articles on the "Tiny Avenger" a turbo'd 2.3. The Aug issue has an article on Camming a "stroked 2.3 Turbo.
My only comment on this subject is "IT AINT CHEAP TO BUILD A BAD 2.3"
Mine wasn't turbocharged and it wasn't cheap but it was different.
Have fun
