I picked up a rebuilder 4-barrel today for $20 and am wondering how to tell the model. I think it's a 1850 (600 single feed vac. sec. with elec. choke) but the # on the airhorn isn't on Holley's site (8834-3 above 1946) is there a part # I'm missing?

Could be an OE unit. Most likely '86 or so Mustang GT (I THINK there were still some carbed units in 86). The number below the list # is the julian date code (day 194, year 76,86,96). It's definitely not an 1850, as the list # would be 1850 through 1850-3.

The Mustang GT stuff was carbed 83-5 w/man. trans & I think they used throttle body on 85 auto. I'm pretty sure 86 was all efi. You may be right on the origin of the carb tho

well, I looked harder at the number and turns out it's 9834-3 which is good and turns out to be a 4160 600cfm so my next question is do these not have rejettable secondaries? I took it apart tonight and there is a plate on the sec. side but no removable jets.

They use a secondary metering plate, which Holley used to sell (may still), but there is a conversion kit available to put a secondary metering block with screw-in jets on the carb. It also includes a longer fuel transfer tube.

The 9834 is basically an 1850 with a factory installed electric choke. Universal non-emissions carb. Also has Ford kickdown lever, if I recall correctly (last had a 9834 in 1985).
