You will enjoy cable. The speed is nice it's always on. To me the best part of cable is being able to run several monitors and several browsers at the same time.

Maybe, but you'd think a 700 meg would be fast enough. Some things are much faster, but I'm surprised at some things that seem to be downloading/uploading at the same speed as before. I thought everything would be click-click-click... {Like in the commercials} ------------------

I'm really happy with my connection speed... Before, I had a phone modem that connected at a "blazing" 26.4k baud rate with the 56k modem due to terrible phone lines. Downloaded files would come in around 3k/second.After going to cable (which has a 512k cap) things come in a lot faster. A test site indicates the real baud rate hangs around 480-500 most of the time. (it varies) But downloaded files (music and pictures) come in at around 60k/second! This is continuous. It can peak up over 100 briefly before the "cap" kicks in. My wife can download a full length song in around 1.5 minutes. Do you have Morpheus, or any other file sharing software running in the background? If you do, it slow things down a LOT! I don't turn it on unless I want to download things myself. You can right click on it in the toolbar to turn it off. A fast processor, and especially a fast video card make the machine more capable of displaying all that extra data much more quickly. My old 166MHz machine at work with a 2mb video card (which is hooked up to a T1 line) is quite a bit slower than my 550MHz Athlon with a 32MB TNT2 video card hooked up to cable. Go to this site to check your actual download and upload speeds. My upload is capped at 128k, and generally runs around 100-115k actual. http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=1 Good Luck! ------------------ Mike Burch 66 mustang real street 302 4-speed 289 heads 10.63 @ 129.3 http://www.geocities.com/carbedstangs/cmml_mburch.html http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/healey/367 [This message has been edited by n2oMike (edited 01-23-2002).]

Upload: 217 kbps This is at a peak usage time. 6:30 pm central. I will try again at slower time. Later, David Cole

Steve, perhaps they didn't configure your settings correctly? I don't know about your provider, but with ours, we would be able to go into the modem's settings and tweak 'em a bit to get faster speeds. We haven't done that, don't need to...but other subscribers on the network did and reported with better speeds than before.Sam, kinda surprised that your work's cable is so slow. I would think a business account with a cable ISP would give you the faster connections. Heck, for that matter, why doesn't the company just get a T1? ------------------ Frank S.----MCA Member 40390 '99 Mustang coupe '77 Ghia--"II Good" '76 Cobra--project

If you have the program running, it slows the connection down... a LOT! Right click on the icon in your lower tool bar and close it out. The internet will run MUCH faster. If Morpheus starts up automatically when the computer is booted up, you can go to the start menu and click on "run". Then type msconfig. Go to the startup menu and un-check Morpheus. You do NOT want Morpheus running when surfing the web. Just try it. My old dialup, that said it was connecting at a "scorching" 26.4k, only tested out at around 17k download... compared to the new tested speed of this cable modem that's usually around 490k. It might not be as fast as some of the rest of you guys, but it runs WAY better then it did. Hmpf, my computer loades pages almost instantly and this test says ** Speed 253(down)/994(up) kbps ** (At least 5 times faster than a 56k modem).Whenver I connect, a little bubble pops up saying "Speed: 10.0 Mbps" Very interesting how it compares and how it performs each test. Some people posted faster download than upload times, I'm vice versa. I ran the test again and it said:** Speed 224(down)/874(up) kbps ** (At least 4 times faster than a 56k modem) and a third time:** Speed 223(down)/936(up) kbps **(At least 4 times faster than a 56k modem) and a fourth time (yes, I was just curious) ** Speed 254(down)/994(up) kbps ** (At least 5 times faster than a 56k modem), back to what it got the first time. and a fifth time (last one, I promise) ** Speed 254(down)/1015(up) kbps ** (At least 5 times faster than a 56k modem) Wonder why my download time is testing so slow, whenever I click on link it loads literally almost instantly.
