Well, we've decided (probaby to Dave "Wythors"'s delight ) to turf the trusty? 97 Pontiac Grand Am in favor of 2 cars. The criteria for the first car (for my wife) are:

4 door (to get the kids in and out easily)
easy to work on (tired of paying for work that I can do myself on an older car)
    reliable
    reasonably powerful - V6 minimum
    reasonably priced

The second car (mine) is easy...

Any suggestions as to what is worth looking at and what should be avoided like the plague? I'm thinking of something in the early 1990's but would entertain older if it's a good solid car.

Thanks for any advice!

The early 90's SHO's were a very cool car(however you likely dont want her to have a faster car then you), They also only come in a standard Tempo's and Topaz's are truly a disposable car IMO.
For a family car i really think the honda accord is hard to beat, reliable, good fuel economy, decent power and good resale.

Now for your car it should be a 84-93 convertible(5.0 of course)

I agree.... a nice Honda Accord can't do you wrong. Those cars run forever, and you can get them at a fairly reasonable price.

Now, as for your car... did I mention the 68 Cougar I found for sale in Chemainus last weekend?? Or the lady that came up to us when we were looking at the 68 and gave us her husband's number because he has "a bunch of those Cougars he would like to sell"? Oh, I guess I did forget to mention that.

Call me ya big doofus.

The accord is a great car my wife has had 4.Dose that make her a ricer? Her new one is a 1998 V-6 3.0L that really moves out good.It gets 36+mpg on the highway and easy 30mpg around town. It's not one of the more reasonable accords out there.Where the 94-97 accords are alittle smaller and get better milage, but not has much power. As for you have no choice but to get a classic Ford.

She's only a ricer if all of those cars have overly-large spoilers, extremely oversized exhaust tips, silly neon graphics plastered all over the car, and rims larger than what comes on the Cobra R. Yet there's a bone-stock 4-cylinder under the hood.

By the way, what's "probaby"??? A new classification of infant? "Mr. Lohnes, I'm pleased to tell you that Sara just gave birth to a Probaby. He should be walking and talking by tomorrow afternoon and graduate college by the end of next week. Congratulations."

Big block? I thought you were a car guy?! The 305 Guinea Pig is only a small block bowtie... if you want the big block, you have to go for the high HP 396 Raccoon or the high torque 454 Porcupine! Of course, the small block 327 Skunk has been known to go like stink too!

Wrong!

Hampster = mouse = small block
guinea pig = rat = big block

Get it straight, you're embarrassing yourself!

I always thought that guinea pig = guinea pig???

That chevy guy obviously doesn't know what he's doing... he can't even get his rodent's right!! Either way they are just vermin and should be taken out on sight.

Who put the picture of a Chevy up here anyhow... oh, it was you Steve. Sorry about that!

Actually a Nissan Maxima is one of the finest family cars around... If you look at classifieds they are hard to find... They should hold together for a good 200,000 miles...

We had an '87 that we put 232,000 on before we sold it...
